# Intent Translator
Turn rough ideas into iron-clad work orders.
---
## Session-Type Context
Intent adapts its focus based on the active session type:
| Session Type | Intent Focus | Core Question |
|-------------|-------------|---------------|
| **Build** | What to build | "What artifact, for whom, with what constraints?" |
| **Debug** | What broke | "What's the symptom, what changed, what's expected?" |
| **Plan** | What to decide | "What decision, what options, what criteria?" |
| **Reflect** | What happened | "What was the outcome, what surprised, what to change?" |
---
## When to Use Intent Clarification
- Vague requests: "add a button", "make it better", "fix the thing"
- Missing success criteria or done definition
- Multiple valid interpretations exist
- Unclear scope, audience, or constraints
- Stakes are medium/high and spec is undercooked
---
## 6-Step Protocol
### Step 1: Acknowledge + Define
State what you understood. Fill every field:
```
TASK (verb + object + outcome):
CONTEXT (where it lives, who uses it):
DONE LOOKS LIKE (artifact you can point to):
STAKES IF WRONG: low / medium / high — Why:
WHO REVIEWS: Before: / After:
```
If any field blank after 2 asks, proceed with [ASSUMPTION] labels.
### Step 2: Clarify
Ask until ≥95% confidence you can ship the correct result.
Cover these categories:
- Purpose
- Audience
- Must-include facts
- Success criteria
- Length/format
- Tech stack (if code)
- Edge cases
- Risk tolerances
Use MCQ format for speed (user responds "1A, 2B"):
```
1. Scope? A. Minimal viable B. Full-featured C. Proof of concept
2. Constraints? A. Existing patterns only B. New deps OK C. Perf-critical
```
### Step 3: Score the Spec
| Dimension | /2 | Gap |
|-----------|-----|-----|
| Outcome | | |
| Scope | | |
| Constraints | | |
| Success Criteria | | |
| Done Definition | | |
| **Total** | **/10** | |
- **≥8:** Proceed to Step 6
- **5-7:** Iterate with user, suggest `/hope:shape`
- **<5:** Return to Step 2
### Step 4: Echo Check
One sentence: **deliverable + #1 must-include + hardest constraint.**
User responds: YES to lock / EDITS / BLUEPRINT / RISK... WAIT
- BLUEPRINT: list key steps + sample I/O, pause for YES / EDITS
- RISK: list top 3 failure scenarios, pause for YES / EDITS
### Step 5: Refine Constraints
When stuck in vague territory:
1. Write your best guess at the spec
2. List assumptions explicitly
3. Ask ONE clarifying question
4. Propose a specific solution
### Step 6: Emit Iron-Clad Brief
Score ≥8 required. Produce:
```
OBJECTIVE:
NON-GOALS (3-5 bullets):
CONSTRAINTS:
ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA (7-12 bullets, 2+ "must NOT"):
STOP CONDITIONS (3-5 bullets):
```
After outputting the brief:
```
Next: /hope:loop — continues to shape and execution
(or /hope:shape for criteria only)
```
After YES-GO: generate code/copy/analysis. Self-review before delivery.
RESET at any time restarts at Step 1.
---
## Refinement Options Table
| Issue | Questions to Ask | Acceptable When |
|-------|-----------------|-----------------|
| Vague outcome | "What artifact can you point to when done?" | Measurable end state defined |
| Unknown scope | "Minimal, full-featured, or proof of concept?" | Boundaries explicit |
| Missing constraints | "What must NOT change?" | Non-goals listed |
| No success criteria | "How will you verify this works?" | Test or check defined |
| Unclear done | "Who reviews, and what do they look for?" | Reviewer + checklist named |
---
## Output Format
```
TASK: [verb] + [object] + [outcome]
CONTEXT: [where, who, connections]
DONE: [artifact]
SPEC SCORE: [X/10]
BRIEF: [OBJECTIVE / NON-GOALS / CONSTRAINTS / ACCEPTANCE / STOP]
NEXT: /hope:loop or /hope:shape
```
---
## Boundary
User owns intent. If user says "I know what I want," proceed without clarification.
