# Saint Kitts and Nevis social security contributions

## Scope and sources

Source-cited draft checked 22 October 2026 for ordinary covered employment. The [official consolidation of the Social Security Act, Chapter 22.10](https://lawcommission.gov.kn/wp-content/documents/Act17TOC/Ch-22_10-Social-Security-Act.pdf) is revised through 31 December 2017. Its Tenth Schedule contains the Contributions Regulations. Current [Board contribution guidance](https://socialsecurity.kn/contributions-2/) corroborates the ordinary rates. The consolidation is not represented as a complete 2026 amendment audit.

## Rates and contribution base

The Board specifies an employee share of 5% and an employer share of 6%, including 1% employment-injury coverage. Thus the combined ordinary contribution is 11%. The regulations' Schedule 1 shows the core employer contribution; use the Board's explicit injury-inclusive total when comparing payroll figures. [Board rates](https://socialsecurity.kn/contributions-2/).

Schedule 2 to the Contributions Regulations sets the monthly insurable earnings ceiling at EC$6,500. The Board's [employer booklet](https://socialsecurity.kn/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Employers-Guide-2018.pdf), page 19, corroborates that ceiling. Do not transfer it to the housing levy or severance calculation.

Regulation 6 includes cash earnings such as overtime, housing allowances, commissions, shift payments, production bonuses, service charges, employer-paid employee liabilities and holiday pay. Its gratuity provision excludes retirement lump sums and December gratuities. The [Board guidance](https://socialsecurity.kn/contributions-2/) describes the December exclusion as bonuses paid in December. Payment classification matters: ordinary December wages are not excluded merely because of the month. Obtain a specific determination where the payment's legal character is unclear.

## Monthly examples

Assume an employee aged 40 in covered employment and a fully established monthly insurable earnings figure. All amounts are EC dollars.

| Earnings before ceiling | Contribution base | Employee 5% | Employer 6% | Total |
|---|---:|---:|---:|---:|
| 4,000 | 4,000 | 200 | 240 | 440 |
| 6,500 | 6,500 | 325 | 390 | 715 |
| 9,000 | 6,500 | 325 | 390 | 715 |

For EC$4,000 basic pay plus EC$500 insurable overtime, the base is EC$4,500: employee EC$225, employer EC$270 and total EC$495. These calculations exclude other payroll levies. They are not net-pay illustrations.

## Age-transition weeks

Regulation 5 starts ordinary contributions in the week a worker turns 16. The final ordinary contribution week is the week the worker turns 62, except that a Monday birthday makes that week the first without the ordinary contribution. The [employer booklet](https://socialsecurity.kn/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Employers-Guide-2018.pdf), pages 13–14, explains the same boundary and the separate employer-only 1% injury contribution outside the ordinary age range. For a birthday payroll, establish the exact date and contribution week before applying an age code. The current guidance has not been reconciled against every possible later pension reform instrument.

## Reporting and payment

Regulation 14 requires payment at month end or within one month thereafter, with the supporting wage statement. Thus ordinary January contributions must be paid no later than the end of February. Regulations 10–11 require the relevant wage records, a nil return where no payments are outstanding, and timely statements even if contributions have not been paid. Regulation 12 provides a supplementary statement for an omitted employee. [Contributions Regulations, pages 111–113](https://lawcommission.gov.kn/wp-content/documents/Act17TOC/Ch-22_10-Social-Security-Act.pdf).

The [Board employer page](https://socialsecurity.kn/employers-2/) requires employer registration, payroll records and use of the allocated employer identifier. Reconcile worker identifiers, earnings, contribution weeks, deductions and employer expense to the submitted return. Keep transmission and payment evidence. These suggested controls help identify omissions before filing.

## Limits

Resolve multiple employment, partial periods, unpaid leave, special coverage, late penalties and self-employed or voluntary assessments separately. This Guide does not calculate benefits or establish eligibility for a pension. A complete post-2017 legislative amendment review and independent accountant review remain required before merge.
