# IRPP calculation

IRPP calculation in Tunisia: how I do it
Personal Income Tax (Impôt sur le Revenu des Personnes Physiques — IRPP) is an annual direct tax levied on the global net income of natural persons residing in Tunisia, as well as non-residents earning income from Tunisian sources. It applies across various categories of income earned over a calendar year.

Who this is for
Applies to: Residents earning income from wages, commercial/non-commercial profits, real estate, or securities, and non-residents earning Tunisian-source income.

Does NOT apply to: Legal entities subject to Corporate Income Tax (IS), or individuals whose total income falls below the mandatory filing threshold.

Refer out / Refuse: Non-residents with complex international tax treaty (DTA) structures or criminal tax audit proceedings—confirm before filing.

Before you start, ask the client
Do you have income from multiple sources or categories (salaries, rental income, dividends, foreign income)?

What is your civil status and number of dependent children at the end of the tax year?

Have you paid any withholding taxes (retenue à la source) or pre-payments during the year?

The method, step by step
Gather documentation: Collect income certificates, tax deduction slips (certificats de retenue à la source), and proof of deductions (confirm before filing).

Determine net income per category: Calculate net taxable income for each category by applying standard or actual professional expense deductions (confirm before filing).

Aggregate total net income: Combine all category net incomes into a global annual taxable base.

Apply personal and family allowances: Deduct personal allowances such as head of household status and dependent children deductions (confirm before filing).

Apply the progressive scale: Calculate the base tax using the applicable progressive tax brackets (confirm before filing).

Deduct pre-payments and withholdings: Subtract all tax already paid at source or via advance payments to determine the final balance due or credit (confirm before filing).

File on the portal: Submit the annual declaration electronically via the tax authority's dedicated online portal before the legal deadline (confirm before filing).

The traps
Omitting secondary income: Failing to report non-salary income (e.g., rental or dividend income) alongside salaries leads to re-assessments and late penalties—confirm before filing.

Unverified withholding certificates: Claiming tax credits without holding official withholding tax certificates triggers systematic audit red flags—confirm before filing.
