# Grow Sustainably
## Core Principle
**Profitability is a superpower.** It gives you infinite runway, clarity, and control. Spend less than you make. When you're profitable, you can take your time, make the right decisions, and move at your own pace.
## Cost-Cutting Rules
1. **Pay yourself as little as possible, at least to start.** Increase salary as the company can afford it.
2. **Hire software, not humans.** Use Pilot/Bench for accounting, Gusto for payroll, Zapier for automation.
3. **Don't get an office.** Remote is the default now.
4. **Don't move to Silicon Valley.** Lower costs = faster path to profitability.
5. **Outsource everything.** Freelancers first, then employees.
## Fundraising (If You Must)
- Bootstrap first. Profitability gives you leverage.
- Consider Regulation Crowdfunding — turn customers into investors.
- If you take VC: profitability means lower dilution and retained control.
## Avoiding Burnout
Two categories of fatal mistakes:
1. **Running out of money** — solved by the cost-cutting rules above
2. **Running out of energy** — equally dangerous
### Personal Sustainability
- Don't treat it as all-or-nothing
- Your business shouldn't make you too happy or too sad
- Hire when it hurts — that means you have a mature business
## Code Example: Profitability Math
```
Monthly revenue: $5,000
Monthly costs: $3,200 (software $200, contractor $3,000)
Monthly profit: $1,800
Runway: Infinite (profitable)
Default alive: ✅ Yes
```
## Common Pitfalls
| Pitfall | Solution |
|---------|----------|
| Spending money you don't have | Stay profitable from day one |
| Hiring before product-market fit | Hire when it hurts, not before |
| Taking VC too early | Bootstrap first for leverage |
| Ignoring burnout | Personal sustainability matters as much as financial |
| Making irreversible decisions early | Avoid long leases and big commitments |
## Verification Checklist
- [ ] Business is profitable or on clear path to profitability
- [ ] Costs categorized as variable vs fixed
- [ ] Salary kept minimal until business can afford more
- [ ] Software used over humans where possible
- [ ] "Default alive or default dead" test run
- [ ] Burnout prevention plan in place
