# Direction
Start with a one-sentence claim and one observable proof shot. Translate 1–2 reference videos into an edit table: shot duration, frame, dominant movement direction, camera move, type hierarchy, cut type, and audio hit. Do not copy a reference's brand assets.
Default 30 s structure: 0–5 s establish the problem, 5–18 s build with 2–4 s shots, 18–25 s show the decisive product action, 25–30 s breathe and resolve. For a 6 s scene, allow about 0.4 s to enter, 4.8 s to read/act, and 0.25 s to exit; keep a hold before the next cut. Adapt to speech and the music, rather than forcing a metronome.
Before motion, make one still for every scene and arrange a contact sheet. Check subject scale, real UI, readable type, safe margins, and shot-to-shot continuity. Then preview first/middle/last and both sides of transitions. Change one variable per review pass so the cause of improvement is visible.
Use [camera and shot grammar](references/camera.md), [motion/easing/transitions](references/motion.md), [typography](references/typography.md), [anti-pattern replacements](references/anti-patterns.md), [storyboard review](references/storyboard.md), and the [brief table](references/brief-template.md). Numbers there are starting points, not brand rules.
For a music-led cut, use [edit rhythm](references/edit-rhythm.md) and [sound cues](references/sound-cues.md). Set a [color script](references/color-script.md) before grading, compare the [measured reference films](references/reference-films.md), then review with the [seven-score rubric](references/review-rubric.md). These are editing decisions and evidence rules, not automatic quality thresholds.
For a launch film that should feel designed (word-by-word builds, magic move, rebuilt UI, sound that follows motion), read [kinetic grammar](references/kinetic-grammar.md) and start from `vid2 init kinetic-launch`.
