# Reconfigure

See how Alterbrain is set up, in plain words, and change anything you like.

## When to use

- "What are my settings?", "/reconfigure".
- "Let me approve emails before they go", "stop suggesting new skills", "I upgraded to Max".
- "Add Zotero", "turn off the browser tool".
- "Redo my writing voice", "add a new course", "change your name".
- "I'm not studying any more", "I started an MBA", "I'm taking online courses now".
- "I do a business degree, add the frameworks", "turn off the MBA frameworks".
- "Encrypt my private notes", "is my backup encrypted?".
- "Use my school's slide template by default", "make my report tone more formal".

## Before you start

1. No clarify needed for a single change. For a new tool or anything that sends, the same checks as `/build` apply (see Steps).
2. Read (all small files):
   - `config/brain.json` (including `learner` and `packs`), `config/autonomy.json`, `config/mcp.selected.json`;
   - `system/catalogue/mcp.json` (only the `name` and `what` of enabled ids);
   - `vault/80_me/IDENTITY.md`, the **Vibe** section of `SOUL.md`, the Profile of `USER.md`;
   - what the user is learning or doing: `learner.kind` (if it is missing or empty, treat it as `mba` when `packs` lists `mba` or a `school` block exists; older installs), the programme note's name and frontmatter in `vault/20_areas/programmes/` (no note: `school.name` and `school.programme` as display text only), the number of active course notes, and for a professional the project notes in `vault/10_projects/*/project.md`;
   - `vault/80_me/voice/*/profile.md` frontmatter (languages, `blind_test`);
   - `state/onboarding.json` (via `node system/scripts/onboard-progress.mjs show`) and `state/built.json` (via `node system/scripts/built.mjs list`);
   - encryption of private notes: `node system/scripts/vault-key.mjs status --json` (a few fields only, including `pre_push_hook`, the safety check against Obsidian Git uploading a private note unscrambled; it never prints a key).
3. Never show raw JSON to the user unless they ask.

## Steps

1. **Show the current setup** (skip if the user already said exactly what to change). At most 15 lines, like this:
   ```
   Here's how I'm set up:
   • Me: Juno, calm and direct, in English
   • You: Alex, MBA at <programme>, 4 courses
   • Sending: email, LinkedIn, jobs → I draft, you send (all channels "draft")
   • New skills: I suggest when I see a pattern (max 3 open); 1 open now
   • Plan: Pro (I run up to 3 helpers at once)
   • Packs on: MBA frameworks and case method, Netherlands job search
   • Tools on: vault access, browser, PDF reader, web fetch, docs lookup, Zotero
   • Your voice: English (blind test: you spotted 2 of 5, which is a pass), Spanish not set up
   • Built for you: my-case-summary
   • Backup: automatic (saves and uploads after each session)
   • Private notes: encrypted on GitHub, key backup tested on 2026-10-08, Obsidian safety check on | not encrypted (you can turn it on)
   • Setup steps still open: career, brand
   ```
   Build the **You** line from the learner kind and the programme note, one pattern per kind:
   - `mba` or `degree`: "Alex, MBA at <programme note name or provider>, 4 courses" (count active course notes; no programme note: the old school text);
   - `online`: "Alex, online courses (Coursera, edX), 3 courses" (the providers on the course notes);
   - `professional`: "Alex, working: <focus areas>, 2 projects" (and "1 course" if there is one);
   - `other`: "Alex, <learner.detail>".
   Show **Packs on** only when `packs` lists something besides `core`.

   Then ask: "What would you like to change?" AskUserQuestion: Sending rules / New-skill suggestions / Tools / Something else (free text).
2. **Make the change, one at a time.** Confirm, then write. Edit only the keys involved and keep the rest of each file as it is. After editing a JSON file, check it still parses: `node system/scripts/check-json.mjs <file>`.

   | Change | How |
   |---|---|
   | Sending level per channel | `config/autonomy.json` `channels.<name>.level`: `draft` is always possible. `approve` and `auto` only if `built.mjs has <blueprint>` succeeds for a blueprint listing that channel (for email: `gmail-send-approval`); otherwise say in one line that sending needs that add-on and offer `/propose` for it. Explain the levels as in `.claude/skills/onboard/workflows/M4-autonomy.md`. |
   | New-skill suggestions | `config/brain.json` `self_build`: `mode` (`propose` or `off`), `proactive` (true/false), `max_open_proposals`. |
   | Plan | `config/brain.json` `plan_tier`: `pro` or `max`. |
   | Turn a tool on | Treat as a small build: `/clarify` type `mcp`, then the `/build` mcp recipe (catalogue id → `config/mcp.selected.json`, keys only in `.env.local` typed by the user, `mcp-gen`). |
   | Turn a tool off | If `state/built.json` has an entry for it, use `/remove-skill`. Otherwise remove the id from `config/mcp.selected.json`. Core tools: warn in one line what stops working first. |
   | Automatic backup | `config/brain.json` `git.auto_commit` / `git.auto_push`. Recommend keeping both on; explain that off means no online backup. |
   | Encrypt private notes (turn it on later) | Same steps as onboarding, `.claude/skills/onboard/workflows/M0-setup.md` step 4 (explain, key-loss warning, ask, install git-crypt with permission, `vault-key.mjs setup`, key copy, recovery drill). After the install command, run `vault-key.mjs status --json` again before asking for an app restart: the script looks in the folder where Windows puts the tool, so a restart is normally not needed. `setup` also installs a safety check against Obsidian Git uploading a private note unscrambled; if it prints a `Warning:` about another tool's check, relay it in plain words and never touch that other file. The same check is kept in place at every session start. **Before asking, add this warning in plain words:** "Notes you saved before today stay readable in the old versions on GitHub. Turning encryption on protects what you save from now on. The only clean fix for the old versions is a fresh private repository, and moving to one is your decision. I will never rewrite your history or force anything." Offer the fresh repository only if the user asks; it is a separate job, planned with `/clarify` first and never part of this change. Turning encryption off is not built: say so plainly if asked, and do not improvise it. |
   | Check the key backup | `node system/scripts/vault-key.mjs check --key "<their key file>"`. For a password-protected copy the user runs it in their own terminal (Terminal panel in the desktop app) and types the password there; never ask for it in chat. |
   | Change what I'm learning or doing (an MBA, a university degree, online courses, working and not studying) | Re-run the learner question of M2 (`.claude/skills/onboard/workflows/M2-you-and-facts.md`, "The learner question"), then M3 for the new answer (`/onboard M3`). Show the current answer first. The answer writes `learner` and `packs` in `config/brain.json` and runs `onboard-seed.mjs`. M2 step 3 decides about `mba`: an MBA answer adds it, a move away from an MBA takes it out, and anything else leaves it as it is, so frameworks the user switched on stay on. Nothing is deleted: courses, notes and frameworks already in the wiki stay. Tell the user that in one line. |
   | Switch the MBA frameworks on or off (for example a business degree, or online courses in strategy) | Edit only `packs` in `config/brain.json`; do not touch `learner`, and do not ask the learner question. Show the current state first ("MBA frameworks: off"). **On:** if `packs` is not a list make it `["core"]`, add `mba` if it is missing, check the file, then run `node system/scripts/onboard-seed.mjs --json` and say how many files under `vault/30_wiki/frameworks/` appear in `created` ("I added 25 business frameworks to your wiki."; none: "They are already in your wiki."). Add once what else it switches on: business reviewer seats in the assignment review (`/assignment critique`). **Off:** remove `mba`, check the file, and say "The frameworks already in your wiki stay." Add one line: answering the learner question again keeps this choice, unless the answer moves to or from an MBA. |
   | Add a course (a new block or term, or one that was missed) | Hand over to `/course new`, not to onboarding. It asks for everything the user has for the course and follows `.claude/skills/course/references/course-setup.md`. For a course already in the vault, `/course <name>` shows its material and gaps. |
   | School, programme or term | These now live in the programme note (`vault/20_areas/programmes/<Programme name>.md`), not in `config/brain.json`. Show the note, change only what the user names, and follow "The programme note" in `.claude/skills/course/references/course-setup.md`. Say once: courses keep what they copied; `/course review` offers to update the courses that took the programme's AI rule. No programme note yet (an older install): offer to make one the same way. Never write the `school` block. |
   | Identity, tone, profile, voice, career, brand, import | Re-run the onboarding module: `/onboard M1` … `/onboard M9` (see the table in `.claude/skills/onboard/SKILL.md`). It shows what is saved and changes only what the user wants. |
   | Re-do a module from scratch | `node system/scripts/onboard-progress.mjs reset <id>`, then `/onboard <id>`. Ask first: "This starts that step from the beginning. Your current files stay until we replace them. OK?" |
   | Default document template | Hand over to `/template attach --default`, which sets the default template for a kind of document (deck, report, memo, letter, CV) in `config/brain.json` under `templates.defaults`. Do not edit that key here. The more specific attachments (deliverable, project, course, programme) are `/template attach` too. |
   | Tone for a programme, course or project | Tone is a formality dial on top of the user's own voice: `academic`, `professional` or `conversational`. Show the current value and the recommended default for their kind (MBA and professional work: professional; degree, online and other course work: academic). **Ask before writing.** On a yes, write only the `tone` key in the frontmatter of that note (the programme note in `vault/20_areas/programmes/`, the course note, or the project note), replacing that one line or adding it, and keep the rest. Say once that it can be overridden for a single deliverable. |
   | Model or effort of a built `my-*` skill | Edit its frontmatter; run `node system/scripts/validate.mjs`. |

3. **After a tools change** (on or off): run `node system/scripts/mcp-gen.mjs`, then say: "Close this session and open the project again so the change takes effect."
4. **Record significant changes** as a decision note. Significant = a sending level changed, self-build turned on or off, a tool with `writes: true` or `tier: "high-risk"` turned on, auto-backup turned off, encryption of private notes turned on, or a module redone from scratch. Write `vault/70_journal/decisions/<YYYY-MM-DD> <Short title>.md` from `system/templates/notes/decision.md`:
   - frontmatter `type: "decision"`, `created` (today, from the system), `status: "open"`;
   - **The question**: what was changed, in one line ("Should email go out only after my approval?");
   - **What I know**: before → after, and why the user said they wanted it (their words, briefly);
   - **Decision** and **Why**: leave the template's placeholder text exactly as it is. Only the user fills these in.
   Small changes (plan tier, suggestion limit, name or emoji) need no note.
5. **Summarise** in one or two lines: what changed, where, and any restart or task.

## Outputs

- Edited keys in `config/brain.json` (including `privacy.encryption`, written by `vault-key.mjs`), `config/autonomy.json`, `config/mcp.selected.json`; regenerated `.mcp.json`.
- A `tone` line in a programme, course or project note, when the user asked for one.
- Edited keys in `config/brain.json` also include `learner` and `packs`, from the learner question, and `packs` alone from the frameworks switch. The programme note is edited in `vault/20_areas/programmes/`.
- Files changed by re-run onboarding modules (see each module's "Files written").
- For a new course: handed to `/course`, which writes the course note and its Material list.
- `vault/70_journal/decisions/<YYYY-MM-DD> <Short title>.md` for significant changes.
- Tasks for anything the user must still do (keys, restart checks).

## Safety

- Never set a channel to `auto` unless its blueprint is built (`state/built.json`). Never loosen a sending level without the user saying so in this conversation.
- Never write the `school` block in `config/brain.json`; the programme note replaces it.
- Never edit `.claude/settings.json`, `system/**` or the catalogue. If a wanted change needs that, say so and suggest `/update-alterbrain` or `/propose`.
- Keys and tokens: only the user types them, only in `.env.local`.
- Vault key files and the password for one: never open, read, print, copy or write them, and never ask for the password in chat. The user types it in a terminal; hooks refuse the rest.
- Never rewrite history, force-push or delete the old repository to hide earlier notes. That is the user's decision, made outside this skill.
- Don't fill in the Decision or Why sections of decision notes.
- Changes take effect at the next action; tools need a restart. Say so.
