# Run Fluid Inspection Checklist
Inspect all vehicle fluids systematically — checking level and condition for each system — to identify leaks, contamination, and degradation before they cause mechanical failure.
## Why This Is Best Practice
**Why best:** Fluid inspection catches leaks, contamination, and degradation before they cause catastrophic mechanical failure, at near-zero cost and time.
**Adopted by:** SAE International and automotive OEM owner's manuals mandate fluid checks as the cornerstone of preventive maintenance. AAA recommends monthly fluid checks; all major service chains (Jiffy Lube, Valvoline) base their service intervals on fluid inspection findings. Rental car companies and fleet operators run fluid checks at every fuel stop.
**Impact:** Engine oil starvation (running 2+ quarts low) is the leading cause of catastrophic engine failure — a $5,000–$15,000 repair from a $0 inspection. Contaminated coolant causes corrosion and overheating; degraded brake fluid absorbs moisture, reducing boiling point and brake effectiveness. The majority of preventable mechanical failures have fluid condition or level as a contributing cause.
## Steps
### 1. Engine oil — check level and condition
When to check: engine cold (off for 10+ min) for accurate dipstick reading.
**Level check:**
1. Pull dipstick, wipe clean, reinsert fully, pull again
2. Read level against MIN/MAX marks — should be at or near MAX
3. Low by 1 quart = add 1 quart of the grade specified in the owner's manual (e.g., 5W-30); do not overfill above MAX
**Condition check:**
- Color should be amber to dark brown
- Black, gritty, or milky (creamy tan) oil is abnormal
- Black + gritty = overdue for change; change immediately
- Milky/creamy = coolant contamination (head gasket failure); do not drive; seek diagnosis
Change interval: consult owner's manual; modern synthetic oil is typically 7,500–10,000 miles; older conventional oil 3,000–5,000 miles. Never exceed manufacturer interval.
### 2. Coolant (antifreeze) — check level and freeze protection
When to check: engine cold — never open the radiator cap on a hot engine (pressurized; scalding coolant will eject).
**Level:** check the plastic overflow reservoir (labeled COOLANT or with a snowflake icon) — should be between MIN/MAX lines.
**Condition:**
- Color: green, orange, pink, or blue depending on type — uniform color is correct; rust-colored or brown = degraded; milky = oil contamination (head gasket)
- Test freeze protection with a coolant tester (hydrometer or refractometer): should protect to −34°F (−37°C) for most climates; adjust mix ratio if needed (50/50 antifreeze/water for most use)
- Change interval: typically every 30,000–50,000 miles or 2–5 years depending on coolant type (green = 2 yr; HOAT/OAT types = 5 yr)
### 3. Brake fluid — check level and moisture content
**Level:** check the translucent reservoir on the master cylinder (driver's side, near firewall); should be between MIN/MAX. Low level indicates either normal pad wear (pads push pistons back, drawing fluid) or a leak.
**If low:** inspect brake pads — if pads are worn down, topping up fluid masks wear that requires pad replacement. If pads are thick and fluid is low = leak; do not drive until inspected.
**Condition:**
- Should be clear to pale yellow; dark brown indicates degradation
- Test moisture content with a brake fluid tester strip or electronic tester: >3% water = replace fluid (water contamination lowers the boiling point, causing brake fade under hard use)
- Change interval: every 2 years or as indicated by moisture test
### 4. Power steering fluid (if hydraulic, not electric steering)
**Level:** check dipstick or MIN/MAX marks on the reservoir (varies by make; consult owner's manual for location)
**Condition:** should be clear or light pink/red; dark brown or burnt smell = degraded; replace. Foamy fluid = air in the system; inspect for low level and leaks.
Change interval: every 50,000–75,000 miles or as directed by manufacturer.
### 5. Transmission fluid
**Level (for vehicles with a dipstick — not all do):**
- Check with engine warm and running (for most automatics) in Park — consult owner's manual
- Color: translucent red = good; dark brown or burnt smell = degraded; pink/milky = water contamination
**Condition:** burnt smell is the clearest sign of degradation; modern sealed transmissions (many post-2010 vehicles) have no dipstick — service only by dealership or shop with specific equipment.
Change interval: 30,000–60,000 miles for conventional; some OEMs claim lifetime fluid (industry-disputed; most technicians recommend 60,000–100,000 miles).
### 6. Windshield washer fluid — check and top off
Level: check clear reservoir under hood; top off with premixed washer fluid (not plain water — plain water freezes and leaves mineral deposits on glass and nozzles).
Do not substitute glass cleaner (Windex) — it damages paintwork and may leave streaks.
### 7. Document findings
Log: date, mileage, all fluid levels/conditions. Flag any abnormal findings for investigation. Compare level readings month-over-month to detect slow leaks.
A monthly 10-minute inspection catches 90% of preventable fluid-related failures before they become roadside breakdowns.
## Common Mistakes
- **Checking oil with a hot engine immediately after driving:** Oil takes 10 minutes to drain back to the pan; a hot check reads 0.5–1 quart low, causing unnecessary topping-up.
- **Topping off coolant without checking for contamination:** Adding water or coolant to a milky/contaminated system masks a head gasket failure that will destroy the engine if driven.
- **Not checking brake fluid level in context of pad wear:** Low brake fluid + thick pads = leak. Low fluid + thin pads = normal (but pads need replacement). Treating them the same leads to ignoring a real leak.
## When NOT to Use
- Electric vehicles: EVs have no engine oil, transmission fluid, or power steering fluid; inspection focuses on coolant (battery thermal system), brake fluid, and windshield washer only.
