# Apply Wet Shaping Technique

Form vegetable-tanned leather over a mold while wet so it retains the shape permanently on drying.

## Why This Is Best Practice

**Impact:** Correctly shaped pieces retain form for decades under working loads.
**Why best:** Vegetable tannins allow the collagen fiber network to reform around a mold
as it dries.

## Steps

1. Confirm leather is vegetable-tanned, 3–5 oz weight or heavier.
2. Submerge the piece in room-temperature water until fully saturated.
3. Remove and blot surface water. The leather should feel cool and pliable.
4. Work quickly — the forming window is 5–15 min.
5. Press the leather firmly onto the mold, starting from the center.
6. Use a bone folder or smooth spoon to push leather into recesses.
7. Secure with clamps or elastic to hold it under tension.
8. Allow to dry fully at room temperature — 12–48 hr depending on thickness.
9. Remove from mold only when completely dry and stiff.
10. Apply conditioner after drying.

## Rules

- Only vegetable-tanned leather wet-molds.
- Never use hot water.
- Never force-dry with a heat gun or oven.

## Common Mistakes

- Forming before fully saturated.
- Removing from mold while still damp.
- Skipping conditioner.

## When NOT to Use

- Chrome-tanned or combination-tanned leather.
- When the finished piece must remain fully flexible.
