# Design Training Periodization Plan
Structure a sport season into progressive phases that build fitness systematically and peak performance for key competitions.

## Steps
1. **Identify competition calendar** — Mark A-priority (peak), B-priority (near-peak), and C-priority (fitness) competitions for the full year.
2. **Define the macrocycle** — Set the full training year (or season) boundary; most sports use 1-2 macrocycles per year.
3. **Divide into mesocycles** — Break the macrocycle into 3-6 week blocks: Preparatory (General → Specific), Pre-competitive, Competitive, and Transition (recovery).
4. **Set mesocycle goals** — Assign primary adaptation targets per block: hypertrophy/base fitness, strength, power/speed, competition-specific skills, or active recovery.
5. **Plan microcycle structure** — Within each week, sequence sessions by intensity: hard/easy/hard or high/low/medium to allow recovery between demanding sessions.
6. **Apply loading patterns** — Use a 3:1 or 2:1 loading-to-unloading ratio (e.g., 3 progressive weeks, 1 deload week) to prevent accumulated fatigue.
7. **Taper before A-priority events** — Reduce volume 30-50% over 1-3 weeks while maintaining or slightly increasing intensity to shed fatigue without losing fitness.
8. **Schedule transition phase** — Plan 1-4 weeks of active recovery (low-intensity, cross-training) after major competitions or at season end.
9. **Track and adjust** — Monitor performance markers (strength tests, time trials, HRV, perceived fatigue) every 2-4 weeks and adjust loads if adaptation stalls or fatigue accumulates.
10. **Document and review** — Record planned vs. actual loads each week; use end-of-season data to improve next macrocycle design.
## Rules
- Never skip the transition/recovery phase; chronic overtraining leads to permanent performance decrements
- Specificity increases as competition approaches — general fitness work dominates early, sport-specific work dominates late
- Volume and intensity are inversely related within a mesocycle; as intensity rises, volume must fall
- Deload weeks are mandatory, not optional, regardless of how the athlete feels
- Individualize block lengths based on training age (novices adapt faster, need shorter blocks)
## Common Mistakes
- **Skipping general preparatory phase** — athletes jump to sport-specific work without aerobic/strength base, increasing injury risk and limiting ceiling for later adaptations.
- **Maintaining high volume into competition phase** — accumulated fatigue masks fitness; performance drops on race/game day instead of peaking.
- **Rigid adherence despite warning signs** — ignoring illness, injury, or persistent fatigue to "stick to the plan" causes overtraining syndrome that can sideline athletes for months.
- **No taper before key events** — failing to reduce load 1-3 weeks out prevents supercompensation; athlete arrives fatigued rather than fresh.
## When NOT to Use
- Single-session or short-term (< 4 week) training planning — use simpler session design instead
- Recreational athletes with no competition goals who train for general health
- Rehabilitation early-phase post-injury where medical protocols override athletic periodization
