# Design Studio Lighting Setup
Design a studio lighting setup for portrait or product photography — selecting the number and position of lights, choosing appropriate modifiers, and placing sources to achieve a specific lighting pattern that serves the creative intent.
## Why This Is Best Practice
**Why best:** Light quality and placement — not gear — determine whether a portrait reads as flat and amateur or dimensional and professional; a repeatable, pattern-based approach (Rembrandt, loop, butterfly, split, flat) lets a photographer hit a specific creative intent reliably instead of by accident.
**Adopted by:** Studio photography fundamentals have been taught consistently since the development of electronic flash (circa 1950s). Scott Kelby's educational materials are the most widely used in professional photography training. The Strobist method (Dave Hobby) popularized accessible studio lighting education for the digital era. Professional advertising and portrait photography studios universally operate from these lighting principles.
**Impact:** Lighting is the primary technical variable that separates professional photography from amateur results. The same subject, same camera, same lens will produce dramatically different results depending on lighting placement and quality. The difference between flat, unflattering light and three-dimensional, sculpting light is entirely a function of lighting design — not equipment quality.
## Steps
### 1. Define the lighting pattern goal
Before placing any lights, choose the pattern based on the creative intent:
**Rembrandt:** main light at 45° to the subject's face, slightly above eye level; produces a characteristic triangle of light on the shadowed cheek; creates drama; classic for masculine portraiture
- One triangular highlight on the cheek opposite the main light
**Loop lighting:** main light at 30–45° to the face, just above eye level; the shadow of the nose forms a small loop downward; most common flattering portrait light; works for most faces
**Butterfly / Paramount:** main light directly in front, above eye level; produces butterfly-shaped shadow under the nose; glamour lighting; historically used for Hollywood portraiture
**Split lighting:** main light at 90° to the subject; exactly half the face is lit; other half in shadow; dramatic; used for mood or editorial
**Flat lighting:** main light close to the camera axis (ring light or on-camera flash); fills shadows; used for beauty photography, skin texture reduction, product photography on white backgrounds
### 2. Place the key light
The key light is the primary illumination source and the light that defines the pattern:
- **Position:** determined by the chosen pattern (see Step 1)
- **Height:** slightly above eye level for most portrait patterns (creates natural downward light direction, mimicking overhead daylight); product photography often uses more side-angled light to reveal texture
- **Modifier:** determines the quality (hard vs. soft) — covered in Step 4
- **Distance:** closer modifier = softer light (inverse square law: the light spread across the subject is larger relative to the source size); farther modifier = harder light
**Inverse square law:** when the light source is moved twice as far away, the intensity drops by 1/4 (not 1/2). This means moving the key light from 3 feet to 6 feet drops the intensity to 1/4 — the same relationship that makes close modifiers produce softer light.
### 3. Add fill light to control shadow depth
Fill light reduces the contrast between lit and shadow areas (the lighting ratio):
- **Ratio:** 1:1 fill = same brightness as key light; flat, even light. 2:1 fill = one stop less than key; gentle shadow. 4:1 fill = two stops less; dramatic shadow. 8:1 fill = three stops less; deep shadow, high drama.
- **Fill light options:**
- A second strobe opposite the key light at lower power
- A reflector (V-flat, foam core, reflector disc) placed opposite the key light; bounces key light back into shadows; no additional power
- The studio floor or ceiling (in small white studios) provides ambient fill
**Reflector vs. light fill:** reflectors produce softer, more natural fill; second strobes produce controllable, measurable fill. For most portrait work, a reflector is the simpler and more flattering option.
### 4. Choose light modifiers for the intended quality
Modifier selection determines light quality (hard vs. soft) and beam shape:

| Strip box | Soft, narrow | Hair light, rim light, product edges |
**Softbox size rule:** larger relative to the subject = softer light. A 4×6 softbox at 2 feet from a headshot subject is very soft; the same softbox at 10 feet produces much harder light.
### 5. Add hair/background lights for three-dimensionality
Two-light (key + fill) setups can feel flat; dedicated hair or background lights add depth:
- **Hair light:** a small strobe or strip box positioned behind and above the subject; adds a rim of light to the hair; separates subject from background; essential for dark-haired subjects on dark backgrounds
- **Rim/kicker light:** positioned behind the subject to the side; adds a bright edge of light to one shoulder and side; high-fashion look; requires grid to prevent flare into lens
- **Background light:** illuminates the backdrop separately from the subject; allows control of background brightness independently; with a spot grid, can create a spot of light on the background
### 6. Test and adjust before the shoot begins
All setups need adjustment once the subject is in position:
- **Shoot a test frame:** evaluate lighting pattern (triangle on cheek?, loop shadow?, symmetry?)
- **Check the catchlights in the eyes:** the position and shape of the catch lights shows where each light source is; well-placed catchlights enhance the portrait; awkward or multiple misplaced catchlights are distracting
- **Evaluate shadow depth:** does the shadow side match the creative intent?
- **Adjust modifier distance for brightness, not just power:** closer = softer + brighter; farther = harder + dimmer
## Common Mistakes
- **Main light too low or level with the subject's eyes:** produces flat light from below that is typically unflattering (creates "horror movie" shadow direction); key lights should generally be above eye level.
- **Fill light too bright:** when fill matches the key light (1:1 ratio), the result is flat, dimensionless light. Let the shadows breathe — 2:1 to 4:1 produces depth.
- **Ignoring the background:** an unlit background defaults to whatever ambient light produces; independent background lighting allows control and creative separation.
