# Design Scene Lighting Plan
Design a cinematographic lighting plan by identifying the key light source, establishing three-point architecture, selecting hard vs. soft quality for emotional intent, and producing a lighting plot that enables the gaffer to execute the vision efficiently.
## Why This Is Best Practice
**Why best:** Three-point architecture (key, fill, rim) is the minimal, controllable structure for shaping form, contrast, and separation on a subject — it gives the DP independent control over exposure, contrast ratio, and background separation instead of one uncontrolled blob of light, and it maps directly onto motivated story-world sources so the result reads as believable rather than staged.
**Adopted by:** The American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) Manual is the industry reference for all professional cinematography. Lighting design is always planned by the Director of Photography (DP) in pre-production before any equipment is loaded. Major films (feature, episodic, and commercial) use formal lighting plots as communication tools between the DP and the gaffer. Every professional cinematography program (AFI, NYU Tisch, USC) requires lighting design as a core skill.
**Impact:** Improvised lighting on set costs time (renting generators, repositioning lights without a plan), money (over-equipped trucks), and quality (clashing light sources, inconsistent color temperature). A 30-minute pre-production lighting plan reduces on-set lighting setup from 3 hours to 45 minutes. Beyond efficiency, lighting plan documents the DP's intent — emotion, time-of-day, quality — which must match the director's vision before cameras roll.
## Steps
### 1. Analyze the scene's dramatic and emotional intent
Before selecting any light source:
- **What time of day does the scene take place?** Midday sun = hard, high-angle light; magic hour = warm, low, directional; interior day = ambient window light; night interior = motivated artificial source
- **What is the scene's emotional tone?** High-key (bright, minimal shadow) = comedy, safety, clarity; low-key (high contrast, deep shadows) = thriller, drama, menace; flat lighting = documentary, alienation, mundanity
- **What is the camera coverage?** Single-camera moving setup vs. fixed two-camera? The lighting must work for all coverage angles
Reference: identify a visual reference from films, paintings, or photographs that conveys the desired mood — a specific Roger Deakins frame, a Caravaggio painting, a Gregory Crewdson photograph. This reference anchors conversations with the director and gaffer.
### 2. Identify the motivated light source
Every artificial light in a narrative scene should appear to come from a believable source within the story world (the "motivated source"):
- **Window light:** motivates a daylight source; light placed outside pointing through practical window
- **Practical lamp:** a table lamp, overhead practical, or candle in the shot motivates warm, low interior light
- **Television:** motivates flickering blue-tinted ambient light
- **Street light:** motivates sharp, directional night exterior pool of light
Motivated lighting is more believable than unmotivated lighting — it maintains the fiction of the story world. Even if the practical source isn't bright enough to actually light the scene (a candle cannot light a wide shot), the motivated source tells the audience where the light comes from.
### 3. Design three-point architecture
The classic three-point system structures the light on the subject:
**Key light (primary):**
- Strongest light; creates the main exposure and defines form and shadow
- Position: 30–45° to the side of the camera axis; 30–45° above eye level (avoids horror lighting from below or flat from front)
- Quality: determined by emotional intent (soft for warmth/intimacy; hard for drama/tension)
**Fill light (secondary):**
- Reduces shadow density from the key; controls contrast ratio
- Position: opposite side of key; lower than key
- Intensity ratio (contrast ratio): 2:1 = even, TV-style; 4:1 = moderate film drama; 8:1 = high-contrast noir
**Rim/back light (separation light):**
- Placed behind the subject, shooting toward camera; separates the subject from the background
- Not always needed; essential when subject's hair or costume color matches the background
- Can be motivated by a practical source behind the subject
### 4. Select light quality for the emotional intent
**Hard light (small source relative to distance — sun, Fresnel, HMI without diffusion):**
- Sharp-edged shadows; reveals texture; high contrast
- Emotional uses: harsh environments, conflict, villain scenes, outdoor daylight, thriller, interrogation
**Soft light (large source relative to subject — diffused LED panel, large softbox, bounced light):**
- Gradual shadow edges; flatters subjects; low contrast
- Emotional uses: warmth, beauty, romance, intimacy, safety
**Modify hardness:**
- Add diffusion (1/4 to full CTF diffusion) to a hard source to soften
- Bounce a hard source off a white reflector for soft fill
- Move a soft source farther away to harden it
### 5. Address color temperature and color grading intent
Match or deliberately mismatch color temperatures for effect:
- **Matched (all sources same Kelvin):** clean, professional; neutral color base
- **Mixed (intentional mismatch):** warm practical lamp (3200K) against cooler daylight from window (5600K) creates naturalistic interior look; foreground is warm, background is cool
- Camera RAW capture: most decisions can be adjusted in color grading, but the direction (warmer/cooler) should be decided in lighting, not post
**Gel conventions:**
- CTO (orange): warms tungsten-equivalent sources toward daylight
- CTB (blue): cools tungsten sources to match daylight balance
- ND (neutral density): reduces intensity without changing color
### 6. Produce a lighting plot for the gaffer
A lighting plot is a top-down diagram of the set showing:
- Camera position(s)
- Subject and furniture positions
- Light positions with: source type (HMI, LED panel, Fresnel), wattage/output, stand height, any modifiers (diffusion, grid, bounce)
- Notes on motivated sources and color
Practical output: a hand-drawn or digital (Vectorworks, Photoshop) overhead sketch with a legend. Even a rough sketch communicates faster than verbal description when setting up lighting with a crew.
## Common Mistakes
- **Flat on-axis lighting:** placing the key light directly next to the camera axis eliminates shadow and produces flat, textureless images. Move the key off-axis.
- **Unmotivated light sources:** a dramatically placed light that has no story-world source breaks the fiction. Even when motivated lighting requires augmentation, the augmentation should appear to come from the motivated source direction.
- **Ignoring the background:** foreground subjects lit beautifully against a blown-out white or completely black background looks amateurish. Light the background separately to place it in the right value relationship to the subject.
## When NOT to Use
- Documentary, run-and-gun, or observational cinema: these forms intentionally prioritize authentic, available-light aesthetics.
