# Design Orchestral Arrangement
Arrange a composition for orchestra by assigning melodic and harmonic material to instrument families based on timbre, range, and balance principles — creating a scored work that realizes the music's emotional intent through the full orchestral palette.
## Why This Is Best Practice
**Adopted by:** Rimsky-Korsakov's "Principles of Orchestration" (1922) — completed posthumously and still in print — is the foundational orchestration treatise used by every major conservatory (Juilliard, Royal Academy, Paris Conservatoire). Samuel Adler's "The Study of Orchestration" is the primary modern textbook. Film scoring programs (Berklee, USC, NYU) teach orchestration as a core skill for all media composers.
**Impact:** Orchestration is the translation from musical idea to realized sound — the same notes arranged poorly (horn solo in its lowest register against dense string writing) sound muddy and opaque; arranged correctly, they can be transcendent. Ravel famously orchestrated his "Bolero" (1928) as a study in orchestral color — the same melody repeated 18 times, interesting only through constant orchestrational variation. Orchestration is not decoration; it is the music.
**Why best:** Orchestration study built on centuries of practical performance feedback — instrument ranges, blend, and balance principles are empirically derived from what actually sounds correct in a concert hall, not theoretical ideals; treatises like Rimsky-Korsakov's and Adler's codify that accumulated evidence into transferable rules.
## Steps
### 1. Study the instrument families and their characteristics
Before arranging, know each instrument's:
- **Range:** written and concert-pitch range; effective range (the portion of the range with best tone quality)
- **Timbre:** characteristic sound quality at different dynamic levels and registers
- **Technical capabilities:** fastest playable passages; idiomatic writing vs. awkward writing
- **Transposition:** clarinets, horns, trumpets, and many wind instruments transpose; the score shows concert pitch for the conductor; parts show transposed pitch for players
**Four families and their strengths:**
- **Strings:** the most versatile orchestral section; sustain, dynamics from ppp to fff; legato and detached; harmonic possibilities; divisi (split sections for independent lines)
- **Woodwinds:** distinct timbres within the family (flute ≠ clarinet ≠ oboe); excellent melodic soloists; blend when doubled; cross-section doublings create hybrid timbres
- **Brass:** power and brilliance; can sustain long notes; horn = smooth and blending; trumpet = bright and penetrating; trombone = noble and dark
- **Percussion:** rhythm, accent, color; tuned (timpani, marimba, xylophone) vs. unpitched (snare, cymbals, bass drum)
### 2. Establish texture and density decisions
Before assigning instruments:
- **How many simultaneous voices?** Dense (4+ simultaneous melodic lines) vs. thin (solo + bass)
- **What is the primary material?** Melody, harmony, rhythm, or color?
- **What emotional quality?** Bright and powerful (brass + strings forte) vs. warm and intimate (strings piano, woodwind solos) vs. dark and dense (low strings + brass)
**Register decisions:**
- High register = bright, light, airy (piccolo, violin harmonics, flute overtones)
- Middle register = warmth, core (oboe, clarinet, viola, French horn)
- Low register = weight, darkness, power (bass clarinet, tuba, contrabass, low brass)
### 3. Assign the melody
Melody can be in any instrument or doubled across several. Key decisions:
**Solo melody:** the most transparent presentation; assigns character to a specific instrument's timbre (oboe = plaintive; clarinet = lyrical; violin = singing; horn = noble)
**Doubling for power:** two or more instruments playing the same melody simultaneously; doubles at the unison or octave
- Doubling within a family (two flutes) = same timbre, more volume
- Doubling across families (flute + violin) = hybrid timbre; sounds like neither alone
- Doubling in octaves expands registral presence; common in climactic passages
**Rule of register priority:** if the melody moves above the accompanying harmony, it cuts through naturally; if harmony is written above the melody, the harmony overwhelms it. Keep accompanying material below the melody in register (with exceptions for specific color effects).
### 4. Assign the harmony
Harmonic support can be:
- **Block chords** (all harmony notes sustained simultaneously): full, rich; good for slower harmonic rhythm; brass or string chords
- **Broken/arpeggiated harmony** (chord tones distributed over time): lighter; creates motion; strings are idiomatic for arpeggios; harp for delicate arpeggio
- **Rhythmic accompaniment** (repeated chord patterns): provides energy; strings pizzicato or light woodwind repeated patterns
- **Pedal point** (sustained single note while harmony moves above): bass instruments hold a drone; powerful tension-building device
**Voice leading:** each harmonic part should move by step or small intervals where possible; large leaps create angular, difficult lines; smooth voice leading produces natural, idiomatic writing.
### 5. Address balance — ensure the melody sounds through the texture
The most common orchestration problem: the melody disappears in the texture.
**Balance principles:**
- The strings section at forte is louder than a single woodwind at forte; adjust doubling and dynamics accordingly
- A brass fortissimo overpowers an entire orchestra at mezzo-forte; use brass sparingly unless the entire orchestra is at forte
- Dynamics must be written instrument-by-instrument: the orchestra doesn't "all play forte" the same way; strings marked mf may need to be marked mp to sound equivalent to winds marked mf
- Leave register space around the melody; crowding the same register with harmony causes muddiness
**Spot-check:** sing the melody against the accompaniment in your head. Is it the most prominent voice? If not, reduce accompanying density or dynamics; raise the melody's dynamic marking.
### 6. Create contrast and variation in the orchestration
Orchestration is the primary tool for creating variety in a through-composed piece:
- **Thinning and thickening texture:** reduce to solo instrument + pizzicato strings before a climax; the contrast amplifies the climax
- **Color rotation:** give the same melody to different instruments in successive phrases — the material is the same; the color changes tell the emotional story
- **Adding and removing percussion:** a single soft timpani roll entering under the strings adds tension without adding melodic material
## Common Mistakes
- **Scoring too densely throughout:** a maximum-density texture throughout a piece has no room to grow; thin the texture before climaxes so they can build.
- **Writing outside comfortable ranges:** notes at the extreme ends of a player's range (very high or very low) are difficult to play softly, in tune, or with good tone. Stay in the effective range for most writing; use extremes for specific effect.
- **Ignoring transposition:** concert-pitch thinking produces notation errors in transposed instruments. Transpose correctly in parts; score in concert pitch unless working from a transposed template.
## When NOT to Use
