# Design Oil Painting Process
Plan an oil painting from ground preparation through layered execution using underpainting, opaque block-in, and transparent glazes — following the fat-over-lean rule to prevent cracking and delamination.
## Why This Is Best Practice
**Why best:** Layered oil technique separates value, color, and luminosity into distinct passes and enforces fat-over-lean drying order — the sequence that prevents cracking while giving the painter control classical ateliers still teach today.
**Adopted by:** Flemish masters (Van Eyck, Rembrandt, Vermeer) developed the layered oil painting process still taught at contemporary ateliers (Florence Academy of Art, Ingbretson Workshop, Grand Central Atelier). The fat-over-lean rule is physics: lean paint dries faster and forms the stable base; fat paint dries slower and must flex over it. Violating this rule causes delamination visible in poorly preserved museum works. Modern representational instruction (Juliette Aristides, Richard Schmid) integrates both classical layered technique and alla prima (wet-into-wet) depending on the desired result.
**Impact:** The layered process separates concerns: value in the underpainting, color in the block-in, atmosphere and luminosity in the final glazes. Painters who attempt all three simultaneously (one-session alla prima without planning) often produce muddy mid-tones and lose the luminosity that glazes provide. Understanding both methods gives the painter control over when to use each.
## Steps
### 1. Prepare the surface
Oil paint adheres best to an absorbent, textured, non-oily ground:
- **Primed canvas (lead white or titanium white gesso):** standard; flexible; appropriate for alla prima and layered work
- **Oil-primed linen:** more tooth; takes paint differently; traditional classical support
- **Toned ground:** mix Raw Umber + Titanium White to produce a warm mid-grey; apply as thin transparent wash; allows values to be read from the start; Sargent, Whistler, and Sorolla used toned grounds almost exclusively
A toned ground provides an instant reference value — lighter paint lifts off it, darker paint pushes into it. Pure white grounds require the painter to build from zero.
### 2. Apply underpainting — establish values without color
Underpainting (imprimatura or grisaille) establishes the value structure in a single color:
- **Color:** Raw Umber or Burnt Umber (most common); Ivory Black (traditional)
- **Medium:** thin with mineral spirits (lean); no oil in this layer
- **Technique:** block in shadows; wipe lights to reveal the toned ground or white primer; leave in mid-tones
- **Time to dry:** 24 hours for thin layers; 48+ hours for thicker applications
The underpainting is the most important value decision in the entire painting — all subsequent layers build on it. Errors here compound.
Alternatively, for alla prima (wet-into-wet, one-session) work: skip the underpainting; use a monochromatic rough block-in with a lean medium to place major value shapes quickly, then proceed to Step 3 while wet.
### 3. Block-in — opaque color over dry underpainting
Block-in establishes color and broad value simultaneously:
- **Medium:** linseed oil + odorless mineral spirits (50/50); this is slightly fatter than the lean underpainting — correct
- **Technique:** apply opaque, mid-thickness paint matching the local color and value of each shape
- **Priority:** large shapes before small; masses before edges; no blending detail
- **Flat brushes** for large areas; small round or filbert for transitions
At this stage, the painting should be readable from a distance but unfinished up close. No detail, no texture.
### 4. Build mid-layers — opaque corrections and temperature adjustments
Once the block-in is dry (usually 2–5 days for thicker layers):
- **Refine edges:** sharpen some edges; soften others; this creates visual hierarchy
- **Adjust color temperature:** warm areas in direct light; cool shadows (or vice versa in late-afternoon light)
- **Develop texture:** add impasto (thick, textured paint) in light areas for surface interest
- **Medium:** oil medium, slightly fatter than block-in layer
Each layer must be fatter (more oil relative to medium) than the previous — lean → fat (fat-over-lean rule). Violating this causes faster-drying upper layers to crack as slower-drying lower layers flex beneath them.
### 5. Apply glazes — transparent final layers
Glazing adds depth and luminosity impossible in opaque paint:
- **Glaze medium:** linseed oil or commercial glazing medium (slow-drying)
- **Pigments:** only transparent pigments glaze effectively — Alizarin Crimson, Phthalo Blue, Viridian, Transparent Oxide Red
- **Technique:** thin transparent wash of color over completely dry opaque layer; the opaque layer shows through the glaze, mixing optically
- **Effect:** shadows deepen; flesh tones glow; skies unify
Glazing is the final step for painters using the classical layered approach. For alla prima paintings, glazes can add punch to darks after the piece has dried.
### 6. Determine finish — varnish after 6 months
Oil paint continues to oxidize and darken after application:
- Do not varnish until paint is fully cured: 6 months minimum (thick impasto may require 12 months)
- Temporary varnish (Gamblin Gamvar) provides protection while paint cures
- Final varnish unifies the surface sheen and protects from dust and UV
Varnish decisions: matte, satin, or gloss. Gloss is traditional and increases color saturation; matte reduces glare for textured surfaces.
## Common Mistakes
- **Fat-over-lean violation:** Thick oil-rich paint in early layers, with lean paint on top, causes the top to dry and contract before the bottom finishes moving — cracks form. Lean always goes first.
- **Glazing over wet paint:** Glazes require completely dry opaque underlayers. Glazing over wet paint lifts and muddles the underlayer.
- **Too much detail in the underpainting:** The underpainting is for values only. Adding line detail in the underpainting leads to outlining and coloring-book syndrome — shapes should emerge from value masses, not lines.
## When NOT to Use
- Quick studies and gesture sketches: the classical layered process requires days between layers.
