## Steps

1. **Measure the room precisely** — Record length, width, ceiling height, window and door locations (with swing direction), HVAC registers, electrical outlets, light switch locations, and any architectural features (fireplace, columns, built-ins). Note distance from corners to each element.

2. **Draw a scaled floor plan** — Use 1/4 inch = 1 foot as standard residential scale. Mark all fixed elements (walls, doors, windows, registers). Digital options: SketchUp, RoomSketcher, Planner 5D. Analog: graph paper.

3. **Identify the focal point** — Every room needs one dominant visual anchor: fireplace, feature wall, large window view, built-in unit. Orient primary seating toward the focal point.

4. **Define functional zones with bubble diagrams** — Before placing furniture, sketch informal circles indicating activity zones: conversation, work, sleeping, dining, circulation. Circulation zones must connect all entry points without routing through activity zones.

5. **Establish minimum clearance standards (ASID/NCIDQ):**
   - Primary circulation path: 36 inches minimum (48 preferred)
   - Between sofa and coffee table: 14–18 inches
   - Around dining table chairs: 36 inches to wall (42–48 for traffic lanes)
   - Bedroom: 24 inches minimum beside bed; 36 inches at foot
   - Kitchen work triangle total: 12–26 feet; no single leg <4 feet or >9 feet

6. **Scale furniture templates** — Draw or download scale templates for each furniture piece. Never estimate furniture fit — a sofa that looks right often blocks circulation or overwhelms the space at scale.

7. **Test multiple layouts before committing** — Move templates; evaluate 2–3 configurations. Common configurations: parallel seating, L-shape, U-shape for living rooms. Test for: focal point visibility from all seats, conversation distance (7–10 feet maximum for natural conversation), and traffic flow.

8. **Apply proportion and scale principles:**
   - Room anchor piece (sofa, bed) should fill 2/3 of the primary wall's width
   - Area rug should extend 18–24 inches beyond sofa edges; in dining rooms, accommodate all pulled-out chairs
   - Artwork center at 57–60 inches from floor (eye level standing); group arrangements treated as single unit

9. **Plan lighting layers** — Each zone needs ambient (overhead), task (reading, work), and accent (art, architectural features) lighting. Mark fixture locations on the space plan; verify switching logic.

10. **Document the final plan with specifications** — Finalized floor plan with dimensions, furniture list with exact dimensions and specifications, finish and color selections, and lighting schedule. This document drives purchasing and installation.

## Rules

- Primary circulation paths must meet 36-inch minimum clearance — compromising this standard creates a functionally impaired room regardless of aesthetic quality.
- Furniture must be scaled on paper before purchasing — room-scale mismatches are the most common and costly interior design error.
- Area rugs define conversation groups; all seating legs should be on the rug, or all front legs on the rug — never leave the rug floating in the center of the room.
- Every room requires at least three layers of lighting; overhead lighting alone creates flat, institutional atmosphere.

## Common Mistakes

- **Pushing all furniture against walls** — creates a "waiting room" effect; floating furniture groups improve conversation and make rooms feel larger.
- **Buying furniture before drawing a floor plan** — scale mismatches discovered after purchase are costly and demoralizing.
- **Ignoring traffic flow from all entry points** — a layout that works from the main entrance may block natural paths to other doors.
- **Selecting area rugs that are too small** — the most common single error in residential interiors; undersized rugs make rooms feel disjointed.
