# Design Habit Stack
Attach a new habit to an existing anchor habit so that the current behavior becomes the automatic cue.
## Why This Is Best Practice
**Adopted by:** Behavior design programs at Stanford (BJ Fogg's Tiny Habits), corporate wellness programs, athletic training systems
**Impact:** Gollwitzer (1999): implementation intentions — specifying exact when/where/how — double habit adoption success rates vs. intention alone; Clear: habit stacking creates unambiguous cues that eliminate the decision of when to start
**Why best:** The brain encodes behavior as sequences. Attaching a new behavior to an established one borrows the existing neural pathway as a trigger, removing the need for willpower or memory. Starting at 2 minutes eliminates the resistance barrier that causes most new habits to collapse in week two.
## Steps
1. **List existing anchors** — Identify 5–10 habits you perform reliably every day without thinking (morning coffee, brushing teeth, sitting at desk, closing laptop)
2. **Choose one new habit** — Pick a single behavior you want to install; do not stack multiple new habits at once
3. **Write the explicit formula** — "After I [CURRENT HABIT], I will [NEW HABIT]" — write it down word for word
4. **Start with the 2-minute version** — Shrink the new habit to its smallest possible form for the first two weeks (2 push-ups, not 30; one journal sentence, not a page)
5. **Place a visual cue** — Put a physical reminder at the anchor location (journal on the coffee maker, floss next to toothbrush)
6. **Track the streak** — Mark each completion on a habit tracker; never miss twice in a row
7. **Expand after consistency** — Once the stack runs automatically for 14 consecutive days, gradually increase the habit's scope or duration
## Rules
- One new habit per stack; stacking multiple new behaviors on one anchor degrades all of them
- The anchor habit must already be fully automatic — not a habit you're also trying to build
- Write the formula explicitly — vague intentions ("I'll do it after lunch") have near-zero adherence
- If the stack breaks, return immediately to the 2-minute version — never abandon the anchor
- Never miss two consecutive days; a single miss is an accident, two misses is the start of a new habit
## Examples
**Formula:** "After I pour my morning coffee, I will open my journal and write one sentence."
**Expansion path:** Week 1–2: one sentence → Week 3–4: five sentences → Month 2: ten-minute freewrite
**Bad anchor:** "After I feel motivated" — motivation is not a reliable cue; use a concrete, timed behavior
## Common Mistakes
- **Choosing a weak anchor** — "After breakfast" varies in time and setting; "after I place my coffee cup on my desk" is specific and stable
- **Starting too large** — 30 push-ups on day one works for two days, then fails; the 2-minute rule prevents early dropout
- **Missing the written formula** — Mental commitments erode; the written sentence is the commitment device
- **Stacking on a habit you're also building** — Two unstable behaviors don't support each other; both collapse
