# Design Grid System

## Steps
1. **Define the format** — document the output format: screen (px, viewport widths), print (mm/inches, paper size), or mobile (dp, device sizes).
2. **Establish baseline unit** — choose a base unit (8px for screen, 4dp for mobile, 5mm for print) that divides evenly into all spacing values; this becomes the atomic unit.
3. **Set margins** — define outer margins as multiples of the base unit; margins frame content and define white space relationship to the edge.
4. **Choose column count** — select a column count that supports the content hierarchy: 12 (maximum flexibility), 6 (editorial), 4 (mobile), 3 (landing pages); columns must divide evenly.
5. **Define gutters** — set gutter width as a fixed multiple of the base unit (e.g., 24px); gutters must be visually separating but not dominant.
6. **Calculate column width** — column width = (total width - (margins × 2) - (gutters × (columns - 1))) ÷ columns; verify this is a whole number of base units.
7. **Add baseline grid for typography** — set a baseline increment matching the body text line height (e.g., 8px baseline for 16px/24px body text); all text elements should sit on baseline.
8. **Define horizontal modules** — divide the vertical space into rows using the same baseline unit; this creates a modular grid for placing images and blocks.
9. **Document the grid** — specify: total width, column count, column width, gutter width, margin width, baseline unit; create a visual reference file.
10. **Test with content** — place real content into the grid; validate that images, text blocks, and UI elements all snap to grid without awkward fractions.
## Rules
- Never mix two different base units in one grid system; all values must be multiples of the single base unit.
- Gutters must be visually narrower than margins — if gutters equal margins, columns appear to float without context.
- Breaking the grid must be intentional and purposeful — a deliberately broken grid element creates emphasis; accidental breaks create disorder.
- Typography must anchor to the baseline grid — text sitting off-baseline creates visual vibration in dense layouts.
- Mobile grid (4dp) and desktop grid (8px) should be related by factor of 2 to ease responsive scaling.
## Common Mistakes
- **Too many columns** — 16-column grids on mobile produce sub-8px columns; always adapt column count per breakpoint.
- **Inconsistent gutter widths** — some columns wider than others signals random layout rather than system.
- **Ignoring baseline grid for body text** — images sit on the grid but text floats between baselines, creating misalignment.
- **Creating a grid around existing designs** — grid must precede layout decisions, not rationalize existing ones.
- **No documentation** — undocumented grids are invisible to new team members; always publish the grid spec.
## When NOT to Use
- Purely typographic single-page compositions using free-form positioning (poster art)
- Real-time data visualizations where layout is dynamically generated
- Designs intentionally subverting grid structure for artistic effect
