# Design Digital Art Workflow

## Steps
1. **Configure hardware ergonomics first** — set pen pressure curves to match personal grip strength (most professionals use a slight S-curve for greater midtone sensitivity); calibrate the display to the target output color profile (sRGB for screen, AdobeRGB for print); test pen tilt and rotation if used.
2. **Define the project file structure** — create a consistent folder hierarchy before starting any project: `/[ProjectName]/refs/`, `/wip/`, `/exports/`, `/finals/`; use date-stamped versioning (YYYYMMDD_v01) for WIP files to avoid overwriting without history.
3. **Set canvas parameters for the output context** — screen work: 2000–4000px on the long edge at 72ppi sRGB; print work: output size at 300dpi in CMYK or AdobeRGB; always err toward larger canvas sizes as downsizing preserves quality but upsizing does not.
4. **Establish a thumbnail and ideation stage** — work at 10–15% of final canvas size with a rough brush for the first 20% of a project; resolve composition, value, and major design decisions before working at full resolution.

- All adjustment layers (brightness/contrast, hue/saturation, curves) must be non-destructive layer adjustments, not applied to pixel layers, so they can be removed or modified without rework.
- Save at least one backup copy of the project folder to a different physical location (external drive, cloud) at the end of every working session; drives fail without warning.
- The working brush opacity should rarely exceed 70% during the painting stage; very high opacity single-stroke painting reduces the ability to blend and build form gradually.
## Common Mistakes
- **Working at full resolution from the start** — zooming to 100% and detailing before the composition and values are resolved wastes time on details that will be painted over or deleted.
- **Unlimited layers without organization** — a file with 200 unnamed layers in a flat list cannot be revised efficiently; layer discipline is not optional on professional projects.
- **Using too many brushes** — switching to a "better brush" is a procrastination behavior; consistent results come from mastery of a few brushes, not from the breadth of the library.
- **Ignoring color profile management** — artwork created in AdobeRGB that is delivered to a web client without conversion will appear oversaturated on standard screens; color profile management is a technical requirement, not optional.
- **Not version-saving before major changes** — applying a filter, color grade, or compositional change without saving a version first means the previous state is unrecoverable if the change fails; always version before major transformations.
