## Steps
1. **Identify optimal performance state** — With the athlete, describe what "feeling ready to compete" looks and feels like: arousal level (1-10), focus quality, body sensations, and self-talk tone.
2. **Audit current pre-performance behavior** — Document what the athlete currently does in the 30-90 minutes before performance; identify helpful and unhelpful existing habits.
3. **Design physical warm-up sequence** — Build a consistent physical activation sequence (dynamic stretch, movement prep, sport-specific drills) that anchors the body to competition readiness.
4. **Select attentional cues** — Choose 2-3 process-focus cue words (e.g., "smooth," "attack," "present") that redirect attention from outcome anxiety to controllable execution elements.
5. **Add a mental rehearsal segment** — Include 3-5 minutes of visualization: athlete vividly imagines executing key skills with confidence, using all sensory modalities (sight, feel, sound).
6. **Establish a time structure** — Map routine to a consistent timeline (e.g., 90 min: arrive and change; 60 min: team warm-up; 20 min: individual prep; 5 min: cue activation).
7. **Practice the routine in training** — Rehearse the full routine before practice sessions and simulated competitions; the routine must be automatized before high-stakes events.
8. **Create arousal regulation tools** — For under-aroused athletes: energizing music, high-intensity movement bursts. For over-aroused athletes: box breathing (4-4-4-4), progressive muscle relaxation.
9. **Test and refine** — After each competition, rate whether the routine achieved the target state (1-10); adjust elements that consistently fail to produce readiness.

- **Copying another athlete's routine** — what activates one athlete may de-activate another; individualization is essential.
- **Ignoring arousal direction** — routines designed to calm an under-aroused athlete make performance worse; always match routine to the athlete's arousal problem.
## When NOT to Use
- Team tactical briefings — pre-game team meetings serve a different purpose and should not substitute for individual preparation
- Injury warm-up protocols where medical rehabilitation requirements override routine design
- Athletes who perform better with spontaneous, less structured preparation — forced routines can increase anxiety in this profile
