# Apply Positive Reinforcement Training
Teach and strengthen desired behaviors using scientifically validated reward-based techniques from operant conditioning.

**Why best:** Adding a positive consequence (R+) immediately after a behavior increases the probability of that behavior recurring; this is the most empirically supported mechanism for voluntary behavior change without side effects of fear, avoidance, or aggression.

## Steps
1. **Identify the target behavior** — define the behavior precisely (e.g., "four paws on floor when greeting" not just "no jumping"); break complex behaviors into discrete steps.
2. **Select a reinforcer** — run a preference test: offer three options simultaneously and observe which the animal pursues most strongly; rank high/medium/low value.
3. **Choose a marker** — use a clicker or consistent verbal marker ("yes!"); the marker must be conditioned before training by pairing it 20–30 times with the highest-value reinforcer.
4. **Determine acquisition method** — select: (a) Luring (food guides position), (b) Shaping (reinforce successive approximations), (c) Capturing (mark the behavior when it occurs naturally), or (d) Targeting (follow a touch point).
5. **Set the rate of reinforcement** — in early acquisition, reinforce every correct attempt (continuous reinforcement, CRF); plan to transition to variable ratio (VR) for maintenance after the behavior is fluent.
6. **Run a training session** — keep sessions 5–10 minutes; begin below the last successful criterion; get 5–10 correct repetitions before raising criteria.
7. **Raise criteria in one dimension at a time** — increase duration, distance, or distraction (the "3 Ds") one at a time; never raise all three simultaneously.
8. **Add a verbal cue** — introduce the cue only after the animal is reliably offering the behavior; say cue → animal performs → mark → reinforce.
9. **Proof the behavior** — generalize across 5+ locations, 3+ people, and increasing distraction levels; treat each new context as early acquisition.
10. **Transition to maintenance schedule** — once behavior is fluent and generalized, shift to variable ratio reinforcement with intermittent jackpots to maintain high motivation.
## Rules
- Mark the exact moment of the target behavior — a late or early marker reinforces the wrong moment.
- Never raise criteria more than 10–20% above the animal's current success rate; keep success rate above 80%.
- End every session on a success, even if you must return to an easier criterion.
- Match reinforcer value to task difficulty — novel, highly distracting contexts require the highest-value rewards.
## Common Mistakes
- **Luring too long without fading** — animals learn to wait for the lure rather than respond to the cue; fade the lure within 3–5 trials by switching to an empty-hand prompt.
- **Skipping marker conditioning** — using a clicker or word without conditioning it first means the marker carries no predictive value.
- **Poisoning the cue** — repeatedly asking for a behavior when the animal cannot succeed (due to distraction or fear) associates the cue with failure; drop back to easier criteria first.
- **Reinforcing the wrong behavior** — late timing marks something other than the target behavior; practice marker timing on video before live sessions.
## When NOT to Use
- When the animal is in acute fear or over-threshold — training cannot occur above the stress threshold; manage the environment first.
- When the behavior problem has a medical root cause — positive reinforcement cannot override pain-driven behavior.
- As a standalone intervention for moderate-to-severe aggression — work under the direct guidance of a veterinary behaviorist.
