# Apply Life Cycle Thinking
Apply life cycle thinking — evaluating environmental impacts across all stages from raw material extraction through end-of-life — to identify where in a product or process's life cycle the highest impacts occur, and design or procurement decisions can reduce total impact.
## Why This Is Best Practice
**Why best:** Evaluating only one visible stage (manufacturing or disposal) misdirects improvement effort; life cycle thinking forces the full cradle-to-grave system boundary so the true hotspot — often raw material extraction or use phase — gets addressed, and prevents "pollution shifting" where fixing one impact silently worsens another.
**Adopted by:** ISO 14040/44 (Life Cycle Assessment standards) are the international reference framework adopted by the European Commission, US EPA, and companies including BASF, IKEA, Procter & Gamble, and Unilever for product environmental claims and ecodesign decisions. The EU's Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) methodology and the UNEP/SETAC Life Cycle Initiative both build on ISO 14040/44. The EU Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (2024) requires LCA-based data for product categories sold in the EU.
**Impact:** Without life cycle thinking, environmental improvement efforts focus on the most visible stage (often manufacturing or disposal) rather than the highest-impact stage. Studies show that for many consumer products, 70–80% of environmental impact occurs during raw material extraction or use phase (e.g., energy consumption while in use) — not in production or disposal. LCA thinking prevents "pollution shifting" — a change that reduces one impact while increasing another is not an improvement.
## Steps
### 1. Define the system boundary and functional unit
Before any calculation, define what is being compared:
- **Functional unit:** the unit of comparison that delivers the same function — e.g., "illuminating a space for 1,000 hours" (not "one light bulb" — different bulbs last different times)
- **System boundary:** which life stages are included?
- **Cradle-to-grave:** raw material extraction → manufacturing → distribution → use → end-of-life (most comprehensive)
- **Cradle-to-gate:** raw material extraction → manufacturing → factory gate (used for B2B comparisons)
- **Gate-to-gate:** only the manufacturing stage (narrowest scope)
- **Geographic scope:** local, regional, or global average impact factors?
Without a clear functional unit, comparisons are invalid — a cotton bag vs. a plastic bag can only be compared per "number of uses to carry groceries," not by weight.
### 2. Inventory life cycle stages
Map the inputs and outputs at each stage:

Use existing LCA databases (ecoinvent, SimaPro, OpenLCA) for emission factors and process data rather than calculating from scratch.
### 3. Identify high-impact stages (hotspot analysis)
Without full LCA software: use a simplified screening LCA to identify where >70% of the impact likely occurs:
Common hotspot patterns:
- **Electronics:** 70–80% of impact in chip manufacturing (rare earth extraction, energy-intensive fabrication)
- **Cotton clothing:** 50–70% in cotton growing (water, pesticides)
- **Plastic packaging:** impact depends on origin (fossil fuel based = high extraction; recycled = lower) but end-of-life leakage to ocean dominates ecosystem concern
- **Food:** meat and dairy have 5–20× the life cycle impact of equivalent plant-based protein
- **Buildings:** use phase (heating/cooling) dominates for most climates (60–70% over building lifetime); materials become more dominant for zero-energy buildings
Hotspot analysis tells you where to focus redesign or procurement criteria.
### 4. Apply life cycle thinking to decisions
**Product design decisions:**
- Design for disassembly: modular components that can be separately recycled
- Material substitution: replace high-impact materials at the hotspot stage
- Durability: longer product life reduces manufacturing impact amortized per use
- Energy efficiency: for use-phase-dominated products (appliances, buildings), energy efficiency is the primary lever
**Procurement decisions:**
- Request supplier LCA data or Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for comparison
- Specify lower-impact material alternatives where EPD data supports the comparison
- Lifecycle cost vs. purchase price: longer-lasting, more efficient products are often cheaper over 10 years despite higher upfront cost
**Policy and communication:**
- Avoid making only end-of-life claims (e.g., "recyclable") without lifecycle context — a recyclable product made from energy-intensive virgin materials may have higher overall impact than a non-recyclable product made from recycled content
- Use LCA data to substantiate environmental marketing claims (required by FTC Green Guides and EU Green Claims Directive)
### 5. Account for trade-offs — avoid burden-shifting
LCA prevents "burden-shifting" — where reducing one impact increases another:
- Electric vehicles: lower operational emissions (use phase) but higher manufacturing impact (battery production); net benefit depends on electricity grid carbon intensity and vehicle lifetime
- Organic cotton vs. conventional: organic avoids pesticides but uses more water and land per kg of fiber
- Paper bags vs. plastic: paper uses more energy in production; plastic has higher ocean-pollution risk; comparison depends on which impact category is prioritized
State explicitly which impact categories are being compared and which are being excluded.
## Common Mistakes
- **Cherry-picking life stages:** reporting only manufacturing impact while ignoring the use phase (or vice versa) produces misleading results. The full system boundary must be specified.
- **Comparing different functional units:** comparing products that provide different amounts of function is invalid. Define the functional unit before any comparison.
- **Treating recyclability as equivalent to being recycled:** actual end-of-life recycling rates for most materials are far below theoretical recyclability — use actual collection and recycling rates for the relevant geography.
