# Apply Gestalt Principles
Arrange UI elements according to perceptual laws so users instantly understand grouping, hierarchy, and relationships without conscious effort.

## Steps
1. **Identify element relationships** — list all UI elements and their logical relationships: which belong together, which are sequential, which are alternatives.
2. **Apply proximity** — place related elements closer together than unrelated ones; use whitespace as a separator (minimum 2× spacing between groups vs. within groups).
3. **Apply similarity** — use consistent color, shape, size, or typography for elements that share the same function; differentiate functionally different elements visually.
4. **Apply common region** — use borders, background fills, or cards to enclose groups of related elements; do not rely on proximity alone for complex groupings.
5. **Apply continuity** — arrange elements in lines or curves to imply sequences and flows; avoid layouts where the natural reading path is interrupted.
6. **Apply closure** — allow partial shapes that users will mentally complete (e.g., truncated cards implying more content); avoid accidental closure that hides content.
7. **Apply figure/ground** — ensure interactive elements read as foreground against background; test on both light and dark modes.
8. **Apply focal point** — establish one dominant visual anchor per screen section using size, color contrast, or isolation; all other elements support it.
9. **Audit with squint test** — squint at the design until blurry; the remaining visible structure (blobs and groupings) should match the intended hierarchy.
10. **Validate with user scanning study** — run a 5-second test (UsabilityHub) to verify users identify the primary purpose and main groups correctly.
## Rules
- Proximity overrides similarity — if elements are close but visually different, they will still be grouped; do not contradict with misleading proximity.
- Never rely on color alone to convey grouping — combine with shape, proximity, or borders for accessibility.
- Every screen needs exactly one primary focal point; two equal focal points create competition.
- Whitespace is a design element — do not fill it; intentional negative space communicates grouping as powerfully as borders.
- Gestalt principles operate preattentively — they work before users consciously look; violations create confusion before users can explain why.
## Common Mistakes
- **Equal spacing between all elements** — destroys grouping signal; users cannot tell what belongs together.
- **Using borders to group everything** — excessive borders fragment the layout; proximity and background color are less noisy alternatives.
- **Inconsistent iconography** — mixing icon styles (outline, filled, colored) signals false similarity distinctions.
- **Ignoring figure/ground contrast** — buttons that blend into backgrounds fail the click target test.
- **Proximity contradicting hierarchy** — placing a section header closer to the wrong section misleads scanning.

- Abstract art or decorative contexts where perceptual rules are intentionally subverted
- Designs explicitly testing user adaptability (research contexts)
- When following a strict brand system that overrides layout decisions
