# Apply Cross-Hatching Technique
Build convincing tonal gradients and surface texture in ink or pencil drawings by systematically controlling line angle, spacing, and layering direction to create form through cross-hatching.
## Why This Is Best Practice
**Why best:** Cross-hatching produces controllable, reproducible tonal gradation and volume using only line direction, spacing, and layering — no blending tools or materials required, and it scales cleanly from small illustrations to large technical plates.
**Adopted by:** Cross-hatching is the standard tonal technique in technical illustration, architectural drawing, comic art (Leyendecker, Breccia, Mignola), engraving (Dürer), and medical illustration. The Society of Illustrators and GNSI (Guild of Natural Science Illustrators) both list cross-hatching as a core technical skill. Architectural sketching standards (from Ching's "Architectural Graphics") rely on cross-hatching for presenting materials and shadow in hand drawings.
**Impact:** Dürer's woodcuts demonstrate that systematic cross-hatching creates convincing volume and texture indistinguishable from painting at distance — achieved entirely through line direction and density control. Random or inconsistent hatching produces visual noise rather than form. Controlled cross-hatching is faster than stippling for equivalent tonal coverage and more scalable for reproduction than smooth graphite gradients.
## Steps
### 1. Understand the four hatching types
Master each in isolation before combining:
1. **Hatching (parallel lines):** lines in one direction; spacing controls value (close = dark, far = light)
2. **Cross-hatching (two directions):** second set of lines at 60–90° to the first; produces darker values
3. **Contour hatching:** lines follow the surface form (curved lines on a sphere, cylindrical lines on a column); adds structural information
4. **Scumbling/circular hatching:** small overlapping ovals; produces soft texture; useful for rough surfaces
### 2. Control line weight and pressure
Line quality determines result quality:
- **Ink (pen):** line weight controlled by nib size (Micron 005 = hairline, 08 = heavy); use the lightest nib for initial layer
- **Pencil:** softer grades (4B–6B) for dark values; harder (H–2H) for light, controlled lines; do not use the same grade for full range
- Begin every hatch layer with light pressure; build to dark — you cannot un-darken ink; pencil allows limited correction
Consistent line length and spacing within a single layer is essential: irregular spacing reads as texture, not smooth gradient.
### 3. Plan the value structure before hatching
Map the values first (pencil sketch or value thumbnail):
- Identify: light face (no hatching), mid-tone (single hatch layer), shadow (2–3 hatch layers), core shadow/occlusion (densest hatching)
- Work light to dark — add layers progressively; each layer darkens the tone
- Maintain the same line direction within a value zone; change angle only for the cross layer
### 4. Apply cross-hatching in sequence
Standard working sequence for building form:
1. **First layer (horizontal or diagonal at 45°):** establish mid-tone areas with evenly spaced lines
2. **Second layer (perpendicular to first):** darken shadow areas; leave light areas untouched
3. **Third layer (diagonal, 30–60° offset):** further deepen darkest shadows only
4. **Contour correction layer:** add contour-following lines on curved forms (cylindrical objects, faces) to reinforce volume
Line direction conventions:
- Shadow sides: hatch follows the shadow edge for a clean termination
- Curved surfaces: hatch follows the curve (not horizontal) — produces round, not flat, appearance
- Cast shadows: slightly different angle than form shadows to visually distinguish them
### 5. Control the edge between tones
Hard vs soft edges:
- **Hard edge:** stop hatching abruptly where two values meet; increases perceived contrast
- **Soft edge (gradient):** increase line spacing gradually as you approach the light; lines become isolated dots before disappearing
- **Lost edge:** skip hatching on the far shadow edge to merge shape into background
Practice: draw a sphere and hatch it with a smooth gradient from full dark on the shadow side to clean white on the light side using only line spacing variation (no smudging).
### 6. Practice isolated exercises before applying to full drawings
Before hatching a full illustration:
- **Exercise 1:** draw 5 value squares, 1 (white) to 5 (black), using only hatching. Compare to a photographic value scale.
- **Exercise 2:** draw a sphere with contour-following hatch to show a convincing round form.
- **Exercise 3:** draw a cylinder and a cube side by side — practice both contour hatching (cylinder) and flat directional hatching (cube faces).
## Common Mistakes
- **Changing line direction randomly:** Direction changes create visual noise and flatten form. Change direction only with intention (cross-layer, or to follow form contour).
- **Hatching in the light areas:** Light areas in cross-hatching = no lines. Filling in lights with light hatching destroys the value range and makes the drawing look grey and muddy.
- **Lines too close from the start:** Building from sparse to dense gives control over the gradient. Hatching densely from the first layer leaves no room to darken shadows further.
