# Pitch deck
## 1. Rules of the genre
Ten to fifteen slides, one idea each, read in four minutes. An investor is scanning for: is this a big market, is this team the one to win it, is there evidence it is working. Everything else is noise.
## 2. The sequence
1. **Title** — company, one-line description a stranger understands, stage, ask.
2. **Problem** — whose pain, how they cope today, why that is bad. Concrete, one customer's story.
3. **Solution** — what you built, in the customer's words. Show the product early.
4. **Why now** — the shift (technology, regulation, behaviour) that makes this possible today and not three years ago.
5. **Market** — bottom-up: users × price = TAM. Never a top-down "1% of a $50B market".
6. **Product** — a screenshot or 30-second demo, not a feature list.
7. **Traction** — the strongest real number, plotted over time. Growth rate matters more than absolute size at early stage.
8. **Business model** — price, unit economics, what a customer is worth.
9. **Go-to-market** — the one channel that works and the evidence, not five channels you might try.
10. **Competition** — name real competitors and the alternative of doing nothing; say what you do differently, not that you are better in every cell.
11. **Team** — why *these* people; the specific unfair advantage.
12. **Ask** — amount, runway it buys, the two or three milestones it funds.
Appendix: cohorts, churn, pipeline, detailed financials, tech.
## 3. Traction is the deck
If you have revenue, it is slide 2 or 3, not 7. If you have no revenue, lead with the sharpest evidence you do have — retention, waitlist conversion, letters of intent, usage. Present it honestly: real axis, no cumulative charts hiding a flat month, no vanity metrics.
## 4. Voice
Plain sentences, numbers with units and periods, no jargon, no superlatives. Every claim either has a source or is labelled as a projection. State the biggest risk yourself and how you plan to retire it — investors find it anyway, and naming it buys credibility.
## 5. When reviewing an existing deck
Read only the titles and say what argument they make. Then check: is the ask stated? Is the market bottom-up? Does any chart flatter? Is there a slide that answers "why you"? Rank findings by what would change an investor's decision.
## What not to do
- No fabricated metrics, logos or partnerships — this is diligence-checked and fatal.
- No "we have no competitors".
- No hockey-stick projection with no assumptions behind it.
- No dense financial model in the main deck; it belongs in the appendix.
## Answer format
Slide-by-slide: sentence-title, the content, the number or asset it needs. Then a list of every figure you could not verify, marked as needing the founder's real data.
