# model-checkpoint-persistence
## Summary
Save and restore intermediate model states during training to enable early stopping, hyperparameter validation, and reproducible model recovery without retraining. This skill is essential for long-running deep learning workflows where computational resources are constrained and optimal model selection depends on held-out validation performance.
## When to use
Apply this skill when training a Transformer or neural network model on a large dataset (e.g., 80,000+ training samples) where validation performance is monitored to prevent overfitting, and you need to halt training early or recover the best-performing model checkpoint without re-executing the entire training loop.
## When NOT to use
- Input dataset is small (<1,000 samples) and training completes in seconds; checkpoint overhead exceeds benefit.
- Validation metric is unavailable or cannot be computed during training (e.g., offline evaluation only).
- Model architecture or hyperparameters are still under exploration; use checkpointing only after fixing architecture.
## Inputs
- trained model state (weights, biases, optimizer state from PyTorch nn.Module)
- validation metric time series (e.g., loss or BLEU scores across epochs)
- training loop with validation evaluation step
## Outputs
- checkpoint file on disk (PyTorch .pt or .pth format)
- best-performing model state recovered for test evaluation
- training termination signal (early stopping trigger)
## How to apply
During model training, monitor the validation set performance (e.g., loss or BLEU score) at regular intervals (e.g., after each epoch). When validation performance improves, save the model weights and optimizer state to disk using PyTorch's checkpoint mechanism. Implement an early stopping rule that terminates training if validation performance does not improve for a specified number of consecutive evaluations. After training completes, load the checkpoint with the best validation performance for evaluation on the held-out test set. This approach ensures that the model selected for final evaluation reflects the best generalization seen during training, not merely the final training epoch.

## Examples
```
model, Loss = train_model(para, TRAIN, VALID, tgt_vacob) # Returns best checkpoint selected during validation monitoring
```
## Evaluation signals
- Checkpoint files are written to disk and can be loaded without error; verify file size is >0 and matches model parameter count.
- Early stopping criterion fires when validation metric plateaus; confirm training loop terminates before final epoch.
- Best checkpoint BLEU score on test set matches or exceeds the reported benchmark (e.g., 0.9988 for GCMSFormer); any lower score indicates suboptimal checkpoint selection.
- Model weights loaded from checkpoint are byte-identical to those saved; verify via hash or layer-wise comparison.
- Checkpoint recovered model produces identical predictions on the same input batch as the state at checkpoint time.
## Limitations
- Checkpoint files consume disk space proportional to model size; for large Transformers, multiple checkpoints may require GB-scale storage.
- Early stopping based on a single validation metric may mask overfitting in other dimensions (e.g., robustness, calibration); validate on held-out test set remains mandatory.
- Checkpoint selection assumes validation metric is a reliable proxy for test performance; distribution shift between validation and test sets can invalidate this assumption.
- No guarantee that a single best validation checkpoint generalizes better than an ensemble of nearby checkpoints.
