# Truncate Bad, Upweight Good: BoN-Style Distillation via Ranking

## Overview
This methodology introduces TUP (Truncate Bad, Upweight Good), a simple yet effective approach to distillation that combines Best-of-N (BoN) style selection with rank-based reweighting. It truncates low-quality samples and upweights high-quality ones based on their relative rankings.

## Core Principles

### Truncation Strategy
Instead of using all samples from the teacher model, TUP truncates the bottom portion of samples based on their quality scores or rankings, effectively filtering out low-quality generations.

### Rank-Based Upweighting
The remaining high-quality samples are upweighted proportionally to their ranks, giving more importance to the best samples during the distillation process.

### Quality Assessment
Quality can be assessed through various metrics such as likelihood scores, reward model scores, or human preference rankings, making the approach flexible and adaptable.

## Implementation Workflow

### 1. Teacher Model Generation
- Generate multiple samples from the teacher model for each input
- Ensure diversity in the generated samples

### 2. Quality Scoring
- Score each sample using an appropriate quality metric
- Options include: likelihood scores, reward model outputs, human preferences

### 3. Ranking and Truncation
- Rank samples by quality score
- Truncate the bottom k% of samples (e.g., bottom 50%)

### 4. Rank-Based Reweighting
- Assign weights to remaining samples based on their ranks
- Higher-ranked samples receive higher weights

### 5. Distillation Training
- Train the student model using the truncated and reweighted samples
- Use weighted loss function during training

### 6. Evaluation
- Compare against standard distillation and BoN approaches
- Measure improvements in downstream task performance

## Benefits
- Simpler than complex distillation methods
- More effective than standard distillation
- Flexible quality assessment mechanisms
- Can be combined with other distillation techniques
- Improves sample efficiency during training

## Use Cases
- Language model distillation
- Reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF)
- Preference-based fine-tuning
- Any scenario where teacher model generates variable-quality samples
- Resource-constrained distillation scenarios

## Activation Keywords
- TUP distillation
- truncate upweight good
- rank-based distillation
- BoN-style distillation
