# Distilling Sequential Computation: Span Collapse with KV-Cache Rollback
**Source**: arXiv:2609.27233v1 (2026-09-23) — Lan, Yang, Li, Livescu, Zhou (TTIC).
## Problem
Autoregressive transformers process sequences token-by-token, but many adjacent token spans are highly predictable or occur as stable units — their representations are compressible. Growing contexts get expensive.
## Core Mechanism
**Lightweight merge module** replaces spans of input tokens with collapsed representations computed on the fly:
1. A small trainable merge module maps a sequence of static token embeddings → **one surrogate embedding** capturing the functional role of the multiple tokens.
2. Pretrained model operates on compressed inputs — **no architectural changes, no backbone re-training**.
3. Applied during inference to both **prompts** and **intermediate decoding steps**.
4. **Rollback mechanism**: stored multi-token KV-cache entries are substituted with their single-step surrogates — the cache itself shrinks, not just attention input.
## Verified Results
| Metric | Result |
|---|---|
| Effective sequence length reduction | up to **40%** |
| Accuracy | minimal degradation across LM evals, QA, summarization, commonsense, long-form math reasoning |
| Adaptation | lightweight merge-module-only fine-tuning further improves accuracy-compression trade-off |
## Implementation Checklist
1. Train merge module offline: pick span candidates (entropy-based or frequency-based — spans that are predictable or recur as stable units); optimize surrogate to match backbone's output distribution on full vs collapsed input (behavioral distillation loss).
2. At inference, merge eligible spans → single surrogate token; feed to frozen backbone.
3. KV-cache rollback: when a collapsed span's KV entries exist, replace multi-step entries with the surrogate's single entry (saves cache memory + future attention compute).
4. Optionally adapt: fine-tune only the merge module with the backbone frozen.
5. Monitor per-task: compression benefits concentrate on predictable text (boilerplate, formatting, common phrases); disable merging for high-entropy reasoning chains.
## Design Notes
- Distinct from token *pruning* (drop information) and static *prompt compression* (works only on prompts): span collapse handles mid-generation merging with cache replacement.
- "Functional role" objective: surrogate must reproduce what the span *does* to downstream computation, not reconstruct its tokens.
- Works across diverse pretrained models — merge module is the only trained component.
