# Active Spiking Perception

## Overview

Active Spiking Perception (ASP) recasts 3D point cloud recognition as an iterative decision process where the spiking neural network's leaky integrate-and-fire (LIF) membrane potential serves as a running belief state over the class prediction. This approach enables:

1. **Active chunk selection**: The membrane potential selects the next spatial chunk to observe
2. **Confidence-margin early exit**: Triggers termination when confidence threshold is met
3. **Anytime interface**: Provides certified performance at any observation budget
4. **Energy efficiency**: Achieves 2.8x to 1.35x less energy consumption

## Key Theoretical Contributions

### Bayesian Interpretation of Leaky Integration
The paper proves that leaky integration in LIF neurons is equivalent to the recursive log-posterior update of a Bayesian filter. This provides a normative foundation for using membrane potential as a belief state.

### Distribution-Free Selective Risk
The exit rule attains distribution-free selective risk with no multiple-testing penalty at the stopping time, providing theoretical guarantees for the anytime interface.

### Streaming State Equivalence
Streaming state carry-forward is exactly equivalent to prefix recomputation with bounded finite-precision drift, ensuring computational correctness.

## Implementation Components

### Slice-Selection Policy
- Scores unvisited farthest-point-sampled chunks from membrane state and geometric descriptors
- Trains end-to-end through straight-through Gumbel-Softmax
- Reduces to argmax at inference time
- Adds only ~2% of backbone parameters

### Performance Results
- **ModelNet40**: 90.62% accuracy
- **ModelNet10**: 93.28% accuracy
- **ShapeNetPart**: 83.21 instance mIoU
- **S3DIS Area 5**: 48.50 mIoU (first spiking results on this dataset)

### Transferability
The mechanism transfers unchanged to:
- Dense prediction tasks
- Foveated non-spiking transformers (fixation replaces chunk selection)
- Cost remains exactly linear in observations

## Usage Guidelines

### When to Apply ASP
- 3D point cloud classification with resource constraints
- Anytime inference requirements with confidence guarantees
- Energy-efficient spiking neural network deployment
- Active perception scenarios where observation order matters

### Implementation Steps
1. **Preprocess point clouds** into farthest-point-sampled chunks
2. **Initialize backbone SNN** with LIF neurons
3. **Implement slice-selection policy** using membrane potential and geometric features
4. **Set confidence threshold** based on compute/energy budget requirements
5. **Train end-to-end** with straight-through Gumbel-Softmax
6. **Deploy with argmax selection** and early exit logic

### Pitfalls to Avoid
- **Chunk size selection**: One S3DIS class is unidentifiable at certain crop sizes
- **Geometric descriptor computation**: Precompute descriptors offline for efficiency
- **Threshold calibration**: Balance between accuracy and energy savings empirically
- **Finite-precision effects**: Monitor drift in streaming state carry-forward
