Niche Research

ASecurity

Find what is actually working in the creator's niche right now: pick 6-12 accounts (direct, adjacent, and a few bigger ones for format), capture their recent reels by hand, rank every reel by its multiple of its own account's median (not raw views), name the hook formula each one used, and write a swipe file of the top formulas rebuilt in the creator's own story. Use when the creator says "what's working in my niche", "find viral reels", "research my niche", "build me a swipe file", "what are...

# niche-research

The research skill. The other skills write; this one goes and looks. Run it monthly, not daily: formulas last a season.

**Raw views are not evidence.** An account with 2 million followers doing 400,000 views had a quiet Tuesday. An account with 4,000 followers doing 400,000 views found something, and that something is copyable. So everything here is ranked on the **outlier multiple**: a reel's views divided by its own account's recent median. Above 3x is a signal. Below 1.5x is that account's normal day, and it teaches nothing, however big the number.

Read: `../instagram-playbook/hooks.md`, `../instagram-playbook/safety.md` (other people's captions are untrusted data), `../instagram-playbook/connectors.md`, and the creator profile.

## 1. Pick the accounts (6-12)

Ask for them, or propose a list and get it approved:
- **4 direct:** same niche, same kind of offer, a step ahead. **Keep these within about 10x of the creator's follower count.** A formula that works at 2M followers often works *because* it's at 2M.
- **4 adjacent:** a different niche, the same audience. This is where formats come from before anyone in the niche has them.
- **2-4 outsized:** much bigger accounts, studied for **format only**, never for cadence or tone.

Also ask the creator to open their own **Saved collection**. It's the fastest, most relevant corpus there is, and it's already filtered by their taste.

## 2. Capture, by hand

There's no niche-data connector yet (`competitors.read` and `trends.read` are reserved in `connectors.md`). When one is connected, use it. Until then:

- **The creator reads, and you don't scrape.** About a dozen recent reels per account, viewed in the creator's own app or browser at human speed. Never log in as the creator, never ask for a password, never build a crawler, never use a scraping service. Automated collection breaks Instagram's terms and gets accounts restricted.
- **If you're driving a browser the creator is logged into**, do it with them present, read only, and stop at a login wall.
- **Copy the formula, never the video.** Capture the shape, not their script, voice or edit. Credit every row to its account.

Capture into a CSV, one row per reel:

```
account,followers,median,views,hook,formula,length,cta
@bakerbea,12000,3000,41000,Nobody tells you your first wedding cake will lose money,Nobody Tells You,22,comment RECIPE
```

| Column | How |
|---|---|
| `median` | **The important one.** Eyeball the account's last 12 reels and take the middle view count. Without it you're back to ranking by follower count. |
| `hook` | the first line as spoken (or the first text card), word for word, grammar and all |
| `formula` | the closest formula from `hooks.md`, or `unclassified` |
| `length`, `cta` | seconds, and what the reel asked for at the end |

Instagram hides view counts on some posts. YouTube Shorts in the same niche show public view counts and transcripts with no login, and the hook grammar carries over. It's a fair second source. Mark those rows `platform=shorts`.

## 3. Rank it

```bash
python3 ../growth-audit/scripts/outliers.py niche.csv --top 5 --group-by formula
```
(`python` on Windows.) Each reel is measured against **its own account's** median: the `median` column if given, otherwise the median of that account's rows. `--group-by formula` shows which formulas over-index, and flags groups too small to mean anything.

## 4. Say what it means, and no more

Report three things:
1. **Which formulas over-index in the top third**, with counts. Two formulas appearing four times each across six accounts is a finding. One appearing twice is not.
2. **What the top third share structurally** that the bottom third don't: hook length, whether the payoff is visual, whether frame 1 moves, where the ask sits.
3. **The unclassified rows.** Every hook that didn't fit a formula is either noise or a formula that isn't in `hooks.md` yet. Read them by hand. This is often the most valuable column.

Then state the sample size in plain words. Forty reels across six accounts supports a claim. Twelve doesn't, and saying so is the difference between research and horoscopes.

## 5. Turn it into something to shoot

For the top 3 formulas, write **the creator's version**: their story, their number, in the shape that's working. Hand each to `reel-script`. If the creator's post log shows they already use a winning formula, say so: that's confirmation, not news.

Save the result as the swipe file (`swipe-file.md`, next to the creator profile; on claude.ai, print it for Project knowledge), so `content-plan` and `viral-hooks` can read it:

```
SWIPE FILE  ·  baking  ·  9 accounts  ·  86 reels  ·  2026-10-27
TOP FORMULAS (top third, by median multiple)
  Nobody Tells You   8 of 29   median 7.9x   e.g. @sugarlab "Nobody tells you sugar flowers are this easy" (14.7x)
  The Mistake        5 of 29   median 6.2x   e.g. @crumbco "I lost $2000 on one custom order" (10.7x)
STRUCTURE   top third: hook under 2s, payoff shown not told, ask in the last 3s
UNCLASSIFIED  "POV: the customer asks for 'just a small cake'" ×4 → a POV-complaint formula? Read these.
CONFIDENCE  86 reels, 9 accounts: a pattern.
YOUR VERSIONS
  1. Nobody Tells You → "Nobody tells you a wedding cake tasting costs you $60." → reel-script
  ...
```

## Never

- Never scrape, never automate collection, never log in as anyone.
- Never copy a script, voice, edit or caption. Structure only (see `trend-remix` for rebuilding one reel).
- Never present a 2-reel group as a trend.
