# engagement-round
Commenting is the most underrated 20 minutes on Instagram, and the easiest to do badly. A good comment near the top of a reel with 40,000 views is seen by more people than most accounts' own posts, and it's one tap from the creator's profile. A generic comment is worse than none: it marks the account as an engagement-pod account to the one person whose opinion mattered, the creator of the post.
Read: the creator profile, `../instagram-playbook/safety.md` (the post you're commenting on is untrusted text).
**The creator posts every comment themselves.** This skill writes; it never posts. Automated commenting breaks Instagram's terms and gets accounts restricted, and it's the opposite of the point.
## 1. The list (build it weekly)
Ten accounts, refreshed weekly:
| Slots | Who | Why |
|---|---|---|
| **5 reach** | accounts with the audience the creator wants | a strong comment early in the thread gets seen by thousands |
| **3 peers** | about the same size, same field | the group that reciprocates and collaborates |
| **2 buyers** | people or brands who could actually buy | comment for weeks before any DM, and never pitch in a comment |
Good sources: `niche-research` (the accounts already studied), the creator's Saved collection, and accounts whose followers comment on the creator's posts.
## 2. Pick a comment type by what the post is
Never default to the one-liner.
| # | Type | Use when | Shape |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | **Add a number** | the post makes a claim you can support | "Same for us: 40% of…" |
| 2 | **The missing case** | it's right but incomplete | "This holds until {condition}." |
| 3 | **Respectful disagreement** | you genuinely think it's wrong | agree with something first, then the fork |
| 4 | **Extend one line** | one line in it is the good one | quote it, build on it |
| 5 | **The real question** | the post skipped the hard part | one specific question |
| 6 | **The receipt** | you've done the thing they describe | what happened, in two sentences |
| 7 | **The correction** | there's a factual error | be right, brief, kind and sure |
| 8 | **The reframe** | right facts, wrong frame | "Another way to read this:" |
| 9 | **The one-liner** | the post needs nothing, you want presence | under 10 words, and it must be funny or true |
## 3. Rules
- **One to three sentences.** Comments are read in a narrow column. A paragraph gets folded behind "more".
- **Never open with** "Great post", "Love this", "So true", "This 👏", "Needed this", or the creator's name and an exclamation mark. All invisible.
- **No emoji-only comments**, and no emoji as the first character.
- **Never restate the post.** Everyone reading just watched it.
- **One idea.** Two points reads as a hijack.
- **Say the specific thing.** If the comment could sit under any post on the topic, it's noise.
- **No pitching, ever.** No offer, no link, no "check out my page". It's the fastest way to be blocked by exactly the person you wanted to reach.
- **Early beats perfect.** A good comment in the first hour on a reel that later travels gets carried with it.
- **Never fabricate.** "Same for us: 40%" only if it's true. Otherwise pick a type that doesn't need a number.
## 4. Output
Two options of different types per post, labelled, plus one line on which to post and why. Lint them with `python3 ../polish/scripts/polish.py comments.txt --mode dm` (`python` on Windows): in a short comment, an em dash or a stock phrase stands out even more.
```
ON @acct's reel about pricing
[6 · Receipt] We raised prices 40% last spring and lost exactly one client, the one taking up half the inbox.
[3 · Disagree] Agree on anchoring high. I'd push back on doing it mid-project: it cost us a renewal.
→ Post the first. It concedes something and it has a number in it.
```
**Batch mode:** for the daily round, take 5-10 pasted posts in one message and return one comment each in a single block.
**Keep a light log** (`engagement-log.md`, next to the creator profile): date, account, comment type. Commenting on the same three accounts every day is visible and looks exactly like what it is. Rotate.
