Comment Hygiene

ASecurity

Stop the agent narrating code with redundant comments, and clean up code that is already full of them. Use when the user says stop commenting, too many comments, remove the comments, no comments, comment noise, the code is over-commented, or asks for clean code without narration. Also apply automatically while writing new code in any language, and when reviewing generated code before commit.

# Comment hygiene

Generated code narrates itself. `// Load the config` above the line that loads
the config. `// Increment counter` above `i++`. The instruction to stop is given
and then quietly dropped a turn later, which is the actual complaint: it is not
that the rule is unknown, it is that it does not survive.

So this skill is written as a decision procedure you run per comment, not as a
preference you try to hold in mind.

## The test

For every comment, ask one question:

> If I delete this line, what does the reader lose?

- **Nothing.** Delete it.
- **The reason it is written this way.** Keep it.

That is the whole rule. Everything below is that rule applied.

## Delete on sight

| Comment | Why it goes |
| --- | --- |
| `// Load the config` above config loading | restates the code |
| `// Increment counter` above `i++` | restates the code |
| `// Constructor` above the constructor | restates the syntax |
| `// Returns the user` above `return user` | restates the return |
| `// Import React` above the import | restates the import |
| `// Handle the error` above the catch block | restates the block |
| `// Loop through items` above the loop | restates the loop |
| `// Set the state` above a setter | restates the call |
| `// TODO: implement` on implemented code | stale, and lies |
| `// ===== SECTION =====` banners | if the file needs signposts, split the file |
| `/** @param {string} name The name */` | restates the signature with no added fact |
| A comment translating an obvious name | `// user email` above `userEmail` |

## Keep, and write more of these

| Comment | Why it stays |
| --- | --- |
| `// Stripe rounds up, so compute in cents to avoid a 1c drift` | a fact not in the code |
| `// Order matters: auth must run before the tenant lookup` | a constraint not in the code |
| `// Safari fires this twice, hence the guard` | external behaviour |
| `// O(n^2) is fine here, n is bounded at 50 by the schema` | a decision and its justification |
| `// Do not use Promise.all, the API rate limits at 5 rps` | a trap for the next person |
| `// Workaround for upstream bug, see <link>` | context that expires |
| A licence header where policy requires it | policy |
| A public API docstring that documents contract, errors, units | contract |

The pattern: keep comments about **why**, delete comments about **what**.

## While writing new code

Write the code with no comments at all. Then read it once and add only the
comments that survive the test above. Usually that is zero to two per file.

If a comment feels necessary to explain what a block does, that is a signal to
name the block instead. A well named function is a comment that cannot go stale.

```js
// before
// check if the user can edit and is not banned and the post is open
if (u.role !== 'guest' && !u.banned && p.status === 'open') { }
// after
if (canEdit(user, post)) { }
```

## When cleaning an existing file

1. Run the counter to find the worst files:

   ```bash
   node "${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT}/skills/comment-hygiene/scripts/comment-density.mjs" .
   ```

2. Work file by file. For each comment apply the test.
3. Do not touch licence headers, public API docs, or anything inside a string.
4. Do not delete a comment you do not understand. If it might encode a real
   constraint, keep it and flag it to the user instead of guessing.

Report what you removed as a count, not as a list. Nobody wants to read forty
lines of "removed `// increment counter`".

## Languages

The rule is identical everywhere. Only the syntax differs: `//` and `/* */` in
C-family, `#` in Python, Ruby and shell, `--` in SQL and Haskell, `<!-- -->` in
HTML and Markdown, `"""docstrings"""` in Python.

Python docstrings on public functions are contract, so they follow the keep
rules, not the delete rules. A docstring that only restates the signature still
goes.

## What this skill will not do

It will not strip comments from code the user did not ask about, and it will not
touch generated files, vendored dependencies, or migrations.
