# Wildfire Preparation

## Understanding Wildfire Risk
### How Wildfires Spread
**Three heat transfer mechanisms:**
- **Radiation**: Heat radiating from flames ignites nearby materials
- **Convection**: Rising hot air and gases preheat materials above the fire
- **Ember attack (spotting)**: Wind-blown embers land on and ignite materials far from the fire front
**Ember attack is the #1 cause of home ignition during wildfires.** Embers can travel more than a mile ahead of the fire front and ignite homes through any vulnerability: open vents, gaps in roofing, accumulated debris, or combustible materials near the house.
### Fire Behavior Factors

| Fuel (vegetation and materials) | More fuel = more intense fire |
| Slope | Fire moves faster uphill (up to 4x speed on steep slopes) |
| Wind | Increases fire spread rate and ember transport |

### Assessing Your Risk

## Defensible Space
### Zone System
**Defensible space is the area around your home where vegetation and other materials are managed to reduce wildfire risk. Create three zones working outward from the house.**
### Zone 0: Immediate Zone (0-5 feet from structure)
**This is the most critical zone. Most homes ignite from embers landing in this area.**
- [ ] Remove all dead plants, dry leaves, and debris
- [ ] Use hardscape (gravel, stone, concrete) directly against the house
- [ ] No bark mulch or flammable ground cover within 5 feet
- [ ] No plants touching the house or growing under windows
- [ ] Remove anything stored against exterior walls (firewood, lumber, furniture)
- [ ] Clean all debris from roof, gutters, and under decks
- [ ] Move garbage cans, recycling bins, and propane tanks away from house
- [ ] Ensure no flammable materials are on or under the deck
- [ ] Screen or enclose areas under decks and raised floors with metal mesh
- [ ] Remove or replace combustible doormats, planters, and decorations
### Zone 1: Lean, Clean, and Green (5-30 feet from structure)
- [ ] Maintain irrigated, well-trimmed lawn or low-growing plants
- [ ] Space shrubs at least twice their height apart
- [ ] Remove branches within 6-10 feet of the ground on trees
- [ ] Space tree canopies at least 10 feet apart
- [ ] Keep trees trimmed away from the house (10+ feet from roof, chimney)
- [ ] Remove all dead plants, branches, and accumulated vegetation
- [ ] Keep grass mowed short (4 inches or less)
- [ ] Choose fire-resistant plants (high moisture, low resin)
- [ ] No continuous shrub-to-tree-to-house fuel ladders
- [ ] Relocate firewood stacks to Zone 2 or beyond
- [ ] Maintain and irrigate landscape if possible during fire season
### Zone 2: Reduced Fuel Zone (30-100 feet from structure)
- [ ] Create spacing between shrub clusters (minimum 10 feet apart)
- [ ] Remove lower tree branches to 6-10 feet above ground
- [ ] Space trees so canopies are 10+ feet apart (on flat ground, more on slopes)
- [ ] Remove dead trees, branches, and accumulated debris
- [ ] Reduce density of vegetation to slow fire spread
- [ ] Break up continuous vegetation with pathways, driveways, or gravel areas
- [ ] Mow annual grasses to 4 inches or less
- [ ] Create fuel breaks along property boundaries where possible
- [ ] Stack firewood at least 30 feet from structures, uphill if possible
- [ ] Clear vegetation from both sides of driveways and access roads
### Slope Adjustments
**If your home is on a slope, increase defensible space distances:**
- 10-20% slope: Extend Zone 2 to 200 feet
- 20-40% slope: Extend Zone 2 to 200+ feet
- 40%+ slope: Maximum defensible space, consult fire professional
- Fire moves much faster uphill, so the downhill side needs the most clearance
## Home Hardening
### Roof (Most Vulnerable Component)
- [ ] Install Class A fire-rated roofing (asphalt shingle, metal, tile, concrete)
- [ ] Replace any wood shake or untreated wood shingle roof
- [ ] Clean all debris from roof surface regularly
- [ ] Ensure no gaps or missing tiles where embers can enter
- [ ] Install non-combustible gutter covers or clean gutters regularly
- [ ] Block any gaps at roof edges, ridge, and eaves with non-combustible materials
### Vents (Primary Ember Entry Points)
- [ ] Install 1/8-inch metal mesh over all vents (attic, soffit, foundation, gable)
- [ ] Replace standard vents with ember-resistant vents where possible
- [ ] Ensure no gaps around vent installations
- [ ] Check dryer vents, kitchen exhaust, and bathroom fans
- [ ] Inspect and maintain vent screens annually
### Walls and Siding
- [ ] Use non-combustible or fire-resistant siding (stucco, fiber cement, brick, metal)
- [ ] If vinyl siding, be aware it melts and exposes structure underneath
- [ ] Seal gaps where siding meets foundation, windows, and roof
- [ ] Maintain siding in good repair (no gaps, cracks, or loose pieces)
- [ ] Consider covering exterior wall areas near ground level with non-combustible material
### Windows
- [ ] Install dual-pane or tempered glass windows (single-pane breaks from radiant heat)
- [ ] Larger windows are more vulnerable - consider limiting size on fire-exposure sides
- [ ] Keep screens in good repair
- [ ] Close all windows and doors when evacuating or when fire threatens
- [ ] Consider non-combustible shutters for high-risk exposures
### Decks and Fences
- [ ] Build or replace decks with non-combustible or fire-resistant decking
- [ ] Enclose area under raised decks with non-combustible skirting
- [ ] Remove all stored items and debris from under decks
- [ ] Use non-combustible fencing within 5 feet of the house (metal, masonry)
- [ ] If wood fence connects to house, install a non-combustible section where they meet
- [ ] Clear vegetation around fence lines
### Chimney and Fireplace
- [ ] Install a spark arrestor with 1/2-inch mesh screen
- [ ] Keep chimney clean and inspected annually
- [ ] Ensure damper closes fully
- [ ] Use a fireplace screen when fire is burning
## Air Quality Protection
### Smoke Exposure Risks
- Wildfire smoke contains fine particulate matter (PM2.5), CO, VOCs, and other toxics
- PM2.5 penetrates deep into the lungs and enters the bloodstream
- Most dangerous for: children, elderly, pregnant women, those with respiratory or heart conditions
- Smoke can travel hundreds of miles from fires, affecting areas not directly threatened
### Air Quality Index (AQI) Guide

### Indoor Air Protection
**Creating a clean air space:**
- [ ] Close all windows and doors
- [ ] Set HVAC to recirculate (close fresh air intake)
- [ ] Run portable air purifiers with HEPA filters (size for the room)
- [ ] Use MERV 13 or higher filters in your HVAC system
- [ ] Seal gaps around windows and doors with damp towels
- [ ] Avoid activities that add indoor pollution (candles, cooking, smoking, vacuuming)
- [ ] Create one "clean room" if you cannot filter the whole house
**DIY air filter (when purifiers are unavailable):**
