# Nougat: Neural Optical Understanding for Academic Documents
## One-line decision
Use this skill when you want to convert academic PDF documents into structured markup using a vision transformer without traditional OCR. Avoid it when you need OCR for general documents or handwriting rather than academic papers.
## Skill metadata
- **Skill type**: academic-document-ocr
- **Paper kind**: operational-method
- **Actionability**: high
- **Evidence quality**: full_paper
## Goal
Convert academic PDF documents directly into structured markup (mathematical equations, tables, references) using an end-to-end vision transformer, bypassing traditional OCR pipelines.
## Problem signature
- Modality: academic PDF page images converted to structured markup text.
- Data state: academic PDFs paired with their LaTeX source for training an OCR-free document understanding model.
- Scale regime: millions of academic document pages from arXiv.
- Model requirement: Donut-style encoder-decoder vision transformer for document understanding.
## Use when
- You need to extract structured text from academic PDFs.
- You want an OCR-free approach to document understanding.
- You need to preserve mathematical equations, tables, and references.
## Do not use when
- You need OCR for handwritten or non-academic documents.
- You need character-level OCR accuracy.
- Traditional OCR pipelines are sufficient for your documents.
## Required inputs
- **academic_pdfs**: PDF documents from academic sources (arXiv, etc.).
- **latex_sources**: LaTeX source files paired with rendered PDFs for training.
- **encoder_decoder**: Vision transformer encoder-decoder architecture.
## Optional inputs
- **augmentation**: Data augmentation for PDF rendering variations.
## Outputs
- **nougat_model**: OCR-free academic document understanding model.
- **structured_markup**: Extracted text with preserved mathematical notation and structure.
## Assumptions and prerequisites
- End-to-end vision transformers can learn to read academic documents without OCR.
- arXiv provides sufficient PDF-LaTeX pairs for training.
- The model can handle mathematical notation and table structures.
## Procedure
1. **Collect PDF-LaTeX pairs from arXiv**
Action: Download arXiv papers with both PDF and LaTeX source.
Why: PDF-LaTeX pairs provide supervised training data.
Note: See paper for details.
2. **Render and align pages**
Action: Render LaTeX to PDF and align pages for training.
Why: Page-level alignment creates input-output pairs.
Note: See paper for details.
3. **Train encoder-decoder model**
Action: Train a Donut-style vision transformer on page-markup pairs.
Why: End-to-end training learns to convert images to structured text.
Note: See paper for details.
4. **Evaluate document understanding**
Action: Test on held-out academic papers for extraction accuracy.
Why: Validates the model's document understanding quality.
Note: See paper for details.
## Parameters to set
- **input_resolution** — Role: Resolution of PDF page images. How to set: High resolution (e.g., 896x672) for text readability. Default/range: 896x672. Effect: Higher resolution improves text recognition accuracy.
- **max_sequence_length** — Role: Maximum output sequence length. How to set: Accommodate full pages with equations. Default/range: 4096. Effect: Longer sequences handle complex pages.
## Validation checks
- Mathematical equations should be correctly converted to LaTeX.
- Table structures should be preserved in the output.
- Text extraction accuracy should match or exceed traditional OCR.
## Failure modes
- Complex multi-column layouts may confuse the model.
- Very long equations may exceed sequence length limits.
- Non-standard academic formatting may not generalize.
## Adaptation notes for VLM training
- Nougat can be used to extract training data from academic papers for VLMs.
- The approach generalizes to other structured document types.
- Combine with VLMs for document understanding tasks.
## Implementation notes
- Use the Donut architecture for the encoder-decoder.
- Pre-train on arXiv data and fine-tune on specific document types.
- Monitor per-element accuracy (text, equations, tables) during evaluation.
## Evidence from the paper
- Nougat converts academic PDFs to structured markup without traditional OCR.
- The model preserves mathematical equations, tables, and references.
- Training on arXiv PDF-LaTeX pairs enables end-to-end document understanding.
- Nougat enables automated extraction of structured content from academic papers.
