# Positioning Map
Use when a team needs to understand how a market is framed and where meaningful whitespace or crowding may exist.
## Procedure
1. Define the customer segment and purchase or adoption context before choosing dimensions.
2. Collect each alternative's current target audience, category language, primary promise, proof points, business model or pricing posture, and important tradeoffs.
3. Derive candidate dimensions from actual customer decisions and competitor claims rather than arbitrary axes that make a preferred product look unique.
4. Plot or cluster alternatives using evidence and record where placement is approximate or contested.
5. Identify saturated claims, under-served needs, category conventions, and tradeoffs customers appear to accept.
6. Check whether apparent whitespace reflects a valuable unmet need or simply an unattractive position nobody wants.
7. Validate important interpretations with customer evidence, market research, or win-loss data where available.
8. Translate the map into positioning hypotheses for Product Strategist or Marketing Strategist rather than declaring final messaging from the chart alone.
## Decision rules
- A positioning map is only as useful as its customer-relevant dimensions.
- Empty space is not automatically opportunity.
- Positioning is perceived relative difference, not a list of internal strengths.
- Refresh maps when competitors or category language materially change.
## Quality gate
The map is useful when dimensions reflect real customer decisions, placements trace to current evidence, whitespace and crowding are interpreted cautiously, and the result creates testable strategic hypotheses rather than decorative quadrants. Is this your skill, or is something wrong with this listing?
