# Environment Material Language
Use when environment materials need to read as one world while distinguishing surfaces and history.
## Procedure
1. Identify major material families, environment history, climate or use conditions, art direction, and viewing scale.
2. Define the visual properties that distinguish families: value, hue, roughness or specular response, edge behavior, grain, pattern scale, damage, dirt, and wetness or other states.
3. Create hierarchy so important gameplay or architectural elements do not disappear into equally noisy materials.
4. Establish believable or stylized wear logic based on use, exposure, construction, and story rather than applying uniform grunge.
5. Use shared tiling, trim, mask, decal, or procedural systems where they preserve quality and reduce unique texture cost.
6. Check texel and material scale and repetition across large surfaces and adjacent assets.
7. Validate materials under representative lighting, weather, and distance rather than authoring-tool studio light only.
8. Document reusable rules and exceptions so other environment or asset artists can extend the world consistently.
## Decision rules
- Material variation should explain surface identity or history, not add noise everywhere.
- Roughness and value structure often matter more than high-frequency texture detail.
- Reuse is valuable when it does not make every location visibly identical.
- Lighting and material design must be reviewed together.
## Quality gate
The material language is ready when surface families are immediately readable, wear and variation feel intentional, scale and hierarchy remain consistent across environments, shared systems control memory and repetition, and new artists can extend the world from documented principles. Is this your skill, or is something wrong with this listing?
