# Ambience Design
Use when creating ambient sound for environments, scenes, applications, or world states.
## Procedure
1. Define the environment's narrative or gameplay function, scale, time or state variations, listener movement, and important foreground information that ambience must not mask.
2. Separate ambience into layers such as continuous bed, localized emitters, intermittent one-shots, weather or time layers, machinery or crowd activity, and transition stingers where useful.
3. Assign frequency and spatial roles so layers complement rather than stack into broadband noise.
4. Design variation intervals, probability, pitch or asset variation, and spatial distribution to prevent obvious loops and repetition.
5. Define state transitions and crossfades for interiors, exteriors, zones, weather, danger, time of day, or other changing conditions.
6. Use silence and reduced density intentionally around dialogue, critical gameplay, or emotional beats.
7. Test in the actual environment while moving through spaces and triggering transitions, not only as a static stereo mix.
8. Check memory, streaming, and voice-count impact and simplify layers that add cost without perceptual value.
## Decision rules
- Ambience should describe the environment, not fill every moment with sound.
- Localized detail is often more convincing than adding more layers to one global loop.
- Transitions are part of ambience design and should not pop or expose loop boundaries.
- Protect dialogue and critical feedback from masking.
## Quality gate
The ambience is ready when the place or state remains legible over time, loops and repetition are not conspicuous, transitions are smooth, important cues stay audible, spatial behavior supports the environment, and runtime voice or memory cost is appropriate. Is this your skill, or is something wrong with this listing?
