## Safety Rules
- **Read-only by default**: Only use GET requests for discovery and inspection
- **Never delete** API definitions or policies without explicit user confirmation
- **Never expose** API keys, secrets, or auth tokens in output
- **Hot reload awareness**: Changes to API definitions require a gateway hot reload to take effect
- **Policy cascading**: Changing a policy affects all keys referencing that policy

## Anti-Hallucination Rules
1. **NEVER assume resource names** — always discover via CLI/API in Phase 1 before referencing in Phase 2.
2. **NEVER fabricate metric names or dimensions** — verify against the service documentation or `--help` output.
3. **NEVER mix CLI commands between service versions** — confirm which version/API you are targeting.
4. **ALWAYS use the discovery → verify → analyze chain** — every resource referenced must have been discovered first.
5. **ALWAYS handle empty results gracefully** — an empty response is valid data, not an error to retry.

| "Metrics aren't needed for this" | Always check relevant metrics when available | API/CLI responses show current state; metrics reveal trends and intermittent issues |

## Common Pitfalls
- **Hot reload required**: After API changes, call `/tyk/reload/group` or the gateway won't pick up updates
- **Key hash mode**: When key hashing is enabled, raw keys cannot be retrieved; only hashed lookups work
- **Rate limit scope**: Rate limits can be set at API, policy, and key levels; the most restrictive wins
- **Dashboard vs Gateway API**: Some endpoints differ between the Dashboard API and the Gateway API; use the correct one
- **Quota reset timing**: Quotas reset based on `quota_renewal_rate` seconds, not calendar boundaries
