# Cloud Logging Skill
Manage and analyze Google Cloud Logging using `gcloud logging` commands.
## Discovery-First Rule
**ALWAYS discover before acting.** Never assume log names, sink names, metric names, or exclusion filter names.

## Anti-Hallucination Rules
1. **NEVER assume resource names** — always discover via CLI/API in Phase 1 before referencing in Phase 2.
2. **NEVER fabricate metric names or dimensions** — verify against the service documentation or `--help` output.
3. **NEVER mix CLI commands between service versions** — confirm which version/API you are targeting.
4. **ALWAYS use the discovery → verify → analyze chain** — every resource referenced must have been discovered first.
5. **ALWAYS handle empty results gracefully** — an empty response is valid data, not an error to retry.

## Common Pitfalls
1. **_Required vs _Default sink**: The `_Required` sink cannot be disabled or filtered (audit logs, access transparency). Only `_Default` and custom sinks can be configured.
2. **Exclusion filter cost**: Excluded logs are not stored but are still ingested. They count toward ingestion quotas but not storage costs.
3. **Log filter syntax**: Cloud Logging uses a filter expression language, not regex. Use `=~` for regex matching: `textPayload =~ "error.*timeout"`.
4. **Sink permissions**: Each sink has a `writerIdentity` service account that needs write permissions on the destination (BigQuery, GCS, Pub/Sub).
5. **Retention periods**: Default retention is 30 days for `_Default` bucket. Custom buckets can have different retention. Locked buckets cannot be shortened.
