# tfsec Terraform Security Scanning Skill
Analyze Terraform configurations for security misconfigurations using tfsec.

## Safety Rules
- **Scans are read-only** -- tfsec never modifies Terraform files
- **Use `--exclude` for known false positives** rather than ignoring all findings
- **Inline ignores (`tfsec:ignore`) should include justification** comments
- **CI pipelines** should start with `--soft-fail` and tighten over time
- **Custom rules** should be reviewed and tested before adding to CI

## Anti-Hallucination Rules
1. **NEVER assume resource names** — always discover via CLI/API in Phase 1 before referencing in Phase 2.
2. **NEVER fabricate metric names or dimensions** — verify against the service documentation or `--help` output.
3. **NEVER mix CLI commands between service versions** — confirm which version/API you are targeting.
4. **ALWAYS use the discovery → verify → analyze chain** — every resource referenced must have been discovered first.
5. **ALWAYS handle empty results gracefully** — an empty response is valid data, not an error to retry.

## Common Pitfalls
- **tfsec is now part of Trivy**: tfsec is maintained but Aqua recommends migrating to `trivy config`
- **Variable resolution**: tfsec may not resolve all variable types -- complex expressions may cause false positives
- **Module sources**: Remote modules are not scanned by default -- clone locally first
- **Terraform version**: tfsec supports HCL2 only -- Terraform 0.11 syntax is not supported
- **Override files**: `_override.tf` files may not be processed correctly in all cases
- **Plan scanning**: tfsec scans HCL, not plan output -- some runtime values are unknown at scan time
- **Workspace variables**: Different workspace variable values may change security posture -- scan each configuration
- **Rule deprecation**: Some rule IDs change between versions -- update CI configurations after upgrades
