# Review doctrine

Pass the text to `review_doctrine`. If the user pointed at a file, read it first.

## What the review covers

- Whether the claims are supported by Scripture
- Whether verses are used in their context or lifted out of it
- Whether anything material is asserted that Scripture does not assert
- Where the teaching sits relative to historic Christian orthodoxy

## Core doctrine and disputable matters

Keep these apart. The Trinity, the deity and resurrection of Christ, salvation by grace through faith, and the authority of Scripture are settled Christian doctrine, and a teaching that denies one of them has a problem worth naming directly.

Baptism mode, church government, the gifts, eschatology, and the ordering of election and faith are disputed between orthodox Christians who read the same Bible carefully. Report those as disputed. Do not grade a Presbyterian's ecclesiology against a Baptist standard and call the result an error.

## Verify the citations

Every reference the text cites gets checked with `lookup_scripture`. A teaching can be entirely orthodox and still rest on a verse that does not say what it is quoted as saying, and that is one of the more useful things a review can catch.

## Tone

Say what is wrong and why, then say what is right. The person reading this may be preaching it on Sunday, so be direct about anything serious and proportionate about anything minor. Do not soften a real doctrinal problem, and do not inflate a stylistic preference into one.

Close by noting that this is a review and not pastoral oversight. A teaching with a serious problem belongs in front of the person's own elders or pastor.
