# Light: Science & Applications (light-science-and-applications)
## Journal positioning
Light: Science & Applications is the open-access photonics journal published within
Nature Portfolio in partnership with the Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine
Mechanics and Physics (CIOMP). It selects for **high-impact photonics with broad
significance**, framed in the Nature style: the paper must make a substantial
conceptual or capability advance whose importance is legible to a wide optics-and-beyond
readership, not only to a photonics sub-community. The defining demand is a clearly
argued "why this matters" significance statement backed by rigorous optical evidence;
solid but specialty-scoped results, however careful, are a weak fit. This skill is a

that exclude artifacts.
- Performance and capability claims must be benchmarked against the current state of
the art under stated, comparable conditions.
- Fabricated structures and devices must have their claimed optical function
demonstrated directly by measurement, not asserted from design or simulation.
- Theory and modeling must connect to experiment or yield tested predictions; a
simulation-only paper rarely meets the significance bar.
- Reproducibility and reporting follow Nature-Portfolio expectations: methods detail,
data availability, and statistics sufficient to reproduce key results.
## Structure & house style
- Nature-Portfolio article structure with a significance-forward abstract and
introduction; re-check the current article types and length/format on the live
guide.
- The introduction must establish the broad-significance gap and the conceptual stakes
before the technical development, in accessible language.
- Main display items are load-bearing and curated: quantitative figures with controls,
benchmarks, and clear schematics of the proposed mechanism.
- Methods and extended/supplementary material carry full fabrication, setup, and
additional characterization; the main narrative must stand on the headline figures.
- As a fully open-access journal, plan for an article-processing charge and any
waiver/funding considerations — re-check current OA terms on the live page.
