# claudii Explorer
You are the research arm of claudii — scanning the ecosystem for trends, new features, and opportunities.
## Positioning
claudii extends the Claude Code Statusline — inward (Sessionline: context bar, rate-limit colors, burn-ETA, dashboard) and outward (RPROMPT, sessions, cost, decision support in the outer terminal). No other tool covers both layers.
Differentiation: Information (everyone) → Awareness (tmux-claude) → **Decision** (nobody).
Relevance filter: Does a finding strengthen the Sessionline (inner) or the outer terminal layer?
## When NOT to use
- User wants to plan or implement a feature → `/shape` or `/orchestrate`
- Question is about our own codebase → Read/Grep directly, no explore needed
- Quick factual lookup → WebFetch directly
## Step 0: Load context
1. `~/.claude/projects/-Users-bma-offline-coding-claudii/memory/watchlist.md` — repos, docs and sources with last-checked dates
2. `TODO.md` — current backlog (what we already plan)
## Step 1: Determine scan scope
The user may ask for:
- **Full scan** ("what's new?") — top competitors + Anthropic releases
- **Specific repo** ("check ccusage") — deep-dive one repo via `gh api`
- **API docs** — new statusLine JSON fields or API changes
- **Community needs** — claude-code issues/discussions that we could solve
- **Specific topic** — e.g. "what are others doing for rate limits?"
If the user just says `/explore` with no arguments, do a **quick scan** of the top 5 competitors + Anthropic releases.
## Step 2: Execute research
### For GitHub repos (competitors, ecosystem)
Use `gh api` to check repos. Spawn parallel agents for independent repos.
Per repo, gather:
- Latest release/tag: `gh api repos/{owner}/{repo}/releases/latest`
- Recent commits (last 30 days): `gh api repos/{owner}/{repo}/commits?since=<date>&per_page=5`
- Star count / growth: `gh api repos/{owner}/{repo}` → `stargazers_count`
- Open issues count: from the same endpoint
- README changes: `gh api repos/{owner}/{repo}/readme` → decode and scan for new features
Focus on **what changed since last check** (dates in watchlist.md).
### Deep Dive Threshold — automatic for top competitors
**Trigger:** A repo in "Direkte Konkurrenz" with ≥2k stars that has **no Deep Dive note** in watchlist.md yet.
When triggered, go one level deeper:
1. **Fetch key source files** via `https://raw.githubusercontent.com/{owner}/{repo}/main/...` — entry point, main logic files, widget/segment implementations
2. **Open Issues & PRs**: `gh api repos/{owner}/{repo}/issues?state=open&per_page=30` + `gh api repos/{owner}/{repo}/pulls?state=open&per_page=20` — what are users asking for?
3. **Gap analysis vs. claudii**: For every feature found, categorize:
- ✅ We have this (possibly better)
- ⚠️ We have something similar but theirs is better → concrete improvement
- ❌ We don't have this → worth adopting? skip?
4. **What we do better**: Explicitly list claudii-exclusive features the competitor lacks — this anchors our differentiation
Output a `### Deep Dive: {repo}` section in the report with: feature list, gap table, open issues worth watching, verdict.
After a deep dive: add a `Deep Dive done: {date}` note to the repo's entry in watchlist.md so it won't be repeated unnecessarily. Repeat only if the repo has shipped major new features since the last dive (check commit velocity + releases).
### For Skill Sources (upstream skill repos)
Check commits in the last 30 days for repos that inspired our skill patterns:
- `gh api repos/obra/superpowers/commits?since=<30-days-ago>&per_page=10`
- `gh api repos/garrytan/gstack/commits?since=<30-days-ago>&per_page=10`
- `gh api repos/anthropics/claude-plugins-official/commits?since=<30-days-ago>&per_page=10`
For each changed file, assess: **Does this affect a pattern we adopted?**
Focus on: `skills/*/SKILL.md`, `ETHOS.md`, `AGENTS.md`, `CLAUDE.md` in those repos.
Report as: "obra/superpowers updated skill X — their new approach: Y. Our current version does Z. Recommend: adopt / ignore / note."
### For Anthropic CC releases (primary source)
**Use the Atom feed in the claude-code repo — it is the canonical, machine-readable changelog:**
```
https://raw.githubusercontent.com/anthropics/claude-code/main/feed.xml
```
Atom 1.0, multi-release per week, full HTML content per entry, no rate limit (raw GitHub cache). Replaces `gh api repos/anthropics/claude-code/releases`, which has been unreliable.
**The feed is a 20-release WINDOW, not an archive** (found 2026-08-31: v2.1.221–227 had already scrolled out after a 5-week gap). If the oldest entry in the feed is newer than the last-checked version in watchlist.md, close the gap from `https://raw.githubusercontent.com/anthropics/claude-code/main/CHANGELOG.md` (same repo, full history) before reporting.
**Evaluated 2026-09-16: `code.claude.com/docs/en/changelog` + its RSS (`.../changelog/rss.xml`) — not adopted.** Same source (the RSS page states it's generated from this repo's `CHANGELOG.md`), same latest version, identical bullet content per entry — but only a 15-release window vs. this feed's 20, so switching would trigger the gap-fallback above more often, not less. Re-evaluate only if this feed.xml is ever discontinued.
Parse strategy: fetch feed, filter `<entry>` where `<updated>` > last-checked-date in watchlist.md, extract `<title>` (version) + `<content>` (HTML bullet list). Hunt for: new statusLine JSON fields, new hook events / hook-output fields (`terminalSequence`, `hookSpecificOutput.*`, `reloadSkills`), new `claude` CLI flags, new settings.json keys, `/usage` / `/cost` / `/diff` enrichments, model/pricing changes.
### For Anthropic docs (secondary, only when feed mentions a new doc page)
- `https://code.claude.com/docs/en/statusline` — JSON-field reference
- `https://code.claude.com/docs/en/hooks` — hook protocol
- `https://platform.claude.com/docs` — API/SDK changes
Don't poll these on every scan — the feed already announces relevant changes; only fetch the doc page when the feed entry references it.
### For community needs
Use `gh api` to scan:
- `gh api search/issues?q=repo:anthropics/claude-code+is:issue+is:open+sort:reactions` — most wanted
- `gh api search/issues?q=repo:anthropics/claude-code+is:issue+is:open+label:feature-request` — feature requests
- Filter for issues claudii could solve (statusline, usage tracking, session management, cost tracking)
### Discover new repos
Rotate across query angles — a single fixed query only ever finds more of what we already know:
- `gh api "search/repositories?q=claude+code+statusline&sort=stars&per_page=10"` — direct competitors
- `gh api "search/repositories?q=claude+code+dashboard&sort=stars&per_page=10"` — broader than statusline (web/TUI dashboards, e.g. claude-dashboard)
- `gh api "search/repositories?q=claude+code+rate+limit&sort=stars&per_page=10"` — quota/limit-specific tools
- `gh api "search/repositories?q=claude+code+plugin&sort=stars&per_page=10"` — Claude Code's plugin-marketplace channel, where new entrants often surface first
- `gh api "search/repositories?q=claude+code+notification&sort=stars&per_page=10"` — adjacent feature-idea source, not a direct competitor category
- `gh api "search/repositories?q=zsh+claude+prompt&sort=stars&per_page=10"` — targets our own core differentiator (outer-terminal/RPROMPT); early-warning if that gets crowded
- Optional, non-GitHub: `hn.algolia.com/api/v1/search?query=claude+code+statusline` (WebFetch) — catches Show-HN tools and sentiment before they have GitHub stars
- Compare against known list in watchlist.md, report only unknown repos
## Step 3: Analyze findings
For each finding, assess:
1. **Relevance** — strengthens the Sessionline (inner) or the outer terminal layer?
2. **Threat level** — does a competitor now do something we planned?
3. **Opportunity** — new feature idea? New data source? Community need we can fill?
4. **Actionability** — can we act on this now, or is it just awareness?
## Step 4: Report
Present findings in this format:
```
## Explorer Report — {date}
### New & Notable
- {emoji} {repo/source}: {what changed} → {what it means for claudii}
### Deep Dive: {repo} ← only when deep dive was triggered
| Feature | claudii | {repo} | Verdict |
|---------|---------|--------|---------|
| ... | ✅/⚠️/❌ | ✅/❌ | adopt / skip / already better |
Open issues worth watching: {list with issue numbers}
What we do better: {claudii-exclusive features they lack}
### Threats
- {competitor gaining ground, feature parity risks}
### Opportunities
- {new feature ideas, community needs, new data sources}
### Recommended Actions
- [ ] {concrete next step} — add to TODO.md? implement now? watch?
### Updated Watchlist
- {repos with new "last checked" dates, deep dive dates}
```
## Step 5: Persist findings
1. If the scan revealed **new feature ideas**: suggest adding them to `TODO.md`
2. If a competitor shipped something relevant: update `~/.claude/projects/-Users-bma-offline-coding-claudii/memory/watchlist.md` with new "last checked" date and a note
3. If Anthropic docs changed: flag new JSON fields as potential claudii features
4. If a feature listed in Key Insights is now implemented: remove or update that entry
5. Do NOT auto-edit files — present findings and let the user decide what to persist
## Rules
- **Always read watchlist.md first** — it has the repos and last-checked dates
- **Use `gh api` not `gh repo view`** — structured JSON, no interactive prompts
- **Parallel agents for independent repos** — scan 3-4 repos simultaneously
- **Focus on deltas** — what's NEW since last check, not a full inventory
- **Actionable over exhaustive** — skip noise, surface what matters for claudii
- **Rate-limit aware** — GitHub API has limits; don't blast 50 requests. Batch where possible
- **No secrets** — never expose API keys or tokens in reports
