# Self-directed learning
Self-teaching fails from three causes: no defined destination, resources
chosen by popularity, and no feedback, which lets misunderstandings
persist for months.
## Method
1. **Define what you will be able to do.** A concrete capability rather
than a topic, since learn distributed systems has no completion
condition (see goal-driven-execution).
2. **Find the shortest path to producing something.** Building early
surfaces the gaps that reading never reveals.
3. **Choose one primary resource.** Sampling five simultaneously
produces fragments; one coherent path plus references works better.
4. **Build in feedback deliberately.** Tests, a mentor, a community, or
a project with a clear success condition, because unassessed learning
drifts (see feedback-for-learning).
5. **Space the study and revisit.** Consistent short sessions beat
occasional long ones for retention (see spaced-repetition).
6. **Teach it to someone.** Explaining reveals precisely which parts you
cannot account for (see teaching-technical-concepts).
7. **Stop at sufficient.** Learning past what the goal requires is a
comfortable way to avoid using the skill.
## Boundaries
Self-directed learning is slower without structure for genuinely
unfamiliar fields, where a course provides sequencing you cannot yet
build (see curriculum-sequencing). It requires sustained motivation that
external structure otherwise supplies. Some domains need supervised
practice for safety.
