# Persuasive writing
Persuasion is not manipulation or volume; it is making it easy for a
reasonable reader to agree. That means a clear claim, evidence they can
check, and taking their doubts seriously instead of pretending they do not
exist.
## Method
1. **State one clear claim.** The reader must know exactly what you want
them to believe or do. A piece arguing three things at once persuades
of none. Put the claim where they cannot miss it, and make everything
serve it.
2. **Lead with what moves this reader.** Understand what they care about,
fear, and already believe, then frame the argument in those terms (see
audience-adaptation). The same claim is argued differently to an
engineer (evidence, tradeoffs) than to an executive (impact, risk; see
exec-one-pager).
3. **Support with evidence, not adjectives.** Specifics, data, examples,
and concrete consequences persuade; "amazing", "revolutionary", and
"clearly" do not. Show the thing; let the reader conclude. One vivid,
verifiable example beats a paragraph of superlatives (see
writing-with-evidence).
4. **Address the strongest objection, honestly.** Name the best
counterargument and answer it (steelman it, do not strawman it). A
reader whose real doubt goes unaddressed stays unconvinced; one who
sees you took it seriously trusts you more. Ignoring the obvious
objection reads as either blindness or evasion (see devils-advocate).
5. **Concede what is true.** Acknowledging the costs and limits of your
position builds credibility and disarms the reader's resistance. An
argument that claims no downsides triggers skepticism; one that is
honest about them earns the benefit of the doubt.
6. **Make the action easy and clear.** End with exactly what you want the
reader to do or think, and lower the barrier to it. Persuasion that
does not resolve into a next step dissipates.
## Boundaries
- Persuasion built on cherry-picked or misleading evidence is
manipulation; it wins the moment and loses the trust, and it is found
out. Argue honestly or do not argue (see the ethics in ad-copy,
landing-page-strategy).
- Emotional appeal has a place (it makes the stakes felt) but cannot
substitute for a real case; pathos without logos is a con.
- Not everything is a persuasion piece; forcing an argument frame onto
what should be neutral information (a reference doc, a report) misleads
(see technical-writing).
