# Deliberate practice
Experience does not produce expertise on its own; people plateau and
stay there for years. Improvement comes from working at the edge of
current ability on a specific weakness, with feedback tight enough to
correct within the session.
## Method
1. **Target one specific weakness.** Not the whole skill but the
component you are worst at, since general practice reinforces what
you already do.
2. **Work just beyond current ability.** Comfortable practice maintains;
practice that fails part of the time is where adaptation happens.
3. **Get feedback within the attempt, not afterwards.** The tighter the
loop between action and correction, the faster the improvement (see
feedback-for-learning).
4. **Repeat with correction, not just repetition.** Repeating an error
entrenches it, which is why unstructured practice can make you worse.
5. **Keep sessions short and focused.** Concentration at this intensity
is limited, and an hour of real focus beats a distracted day.
6. **Measure something objective.** A number or an external judgement,
since self-assessment of skill is unreliable at every level (see
skill-assessment).
7. **Return to fundamentals when stuck.** Plateaus often trace to a
basic component executed imprecisely (see mental-model-building).
## Boundaries
Deliberate practice is effortful and cannot be sustained for long
periods daily. It requires a way to know you were wrong, which some
domains provide poorly. Domains without clear feedback need proxies and
progress is correspondingly slower.
