# Competitive messaging
Buyers compare whether or not you help them, so refusing to acknowledge
alternatives leaves the comparison to the competitor. Doing it well
means being accurate, including about where they are better, which reads
as confidence.
## Method
1. **Be accurate and current.** Comparison claims go stale as
competitors ship, and an outdated claim is discovered and costs
credibility (see agent-brand-guardian).
2. **Compare on what buyers actually weigh.** A feature table where you
win on things nobody cares about persuades nobody.
3. **Concede where they are better.** Naming what a competitor does well
makes every other claim more believable and is what buyers remember.
4. **Recommend the alternative when it fits better.** Saying so honestly
builds referrals and avoids customers who will churn (see
retention-marketing).
5. **Substantiate every claim.** Performance and capability comparisons
need evidence, and unsupported claims carry legal exposure in many
markets.
6. **Equip sales with objection handling, not attacks.** Specific
answers to specific concerns, since disparagement reflects badly on
the person saying it.
7. **Keep intelligence to public sources.** Published material, trials,
and customer conversations, never misrepresentation to obtain
information (see agent-competitive-analysis-team).
## Boundaries
Comparative advertising is regulated in many jurisdictions and
substantiation is a legal requirement rather than a courtesy.
Competitors change and comparisons need maintenance. Competing purely on
comparison rather than on your own position is a weak strategy (see
positioning-and-messaging).
