# Trace a resource request to its funding window
## When to use
Use when a project asks for staff, equipment or external services to meet one dated work package. This method identifies authorization and timing gaps; it does not procure or assign a resource.
## Inputs
- Work-package scope, predecessor dates, resource quantity and skill or specification, needed start and end dates.
- Capacity and availability evidence, lead times, approved funding by period and cost code, and existing commitments.
- Approval sequence and allowed transfer or extension rules supplied by the organization.
## Procedure
1. Trace the requested resource to the earliest dependent task and latest useful arrival. Calculate the request-to-ready interval using supplied lead times.
2. Check capacity separately from eligibility: a person may have free hours but lack the required qualification or approval; a tool may exist but be reserved elsewhere.
3. Match estimated spend and commitment date to the effective funding window and cost code. Keep a future budget request separate from approved authority.
4. List options that respect the schedule and funding constraints, such as delaying dependent work or seeking an authorized change. Mark their consequences and unknowns.
5. Name the exact approval or evidence required before a resource can be represented as secured.
## Completion check
Return the demand interval, resource readiness interval, funding and approval windows, overlap test, blocking predecessor and conditional options. A feasible claim requires all intervals and qualifications to align.
## Known-wrong case and stop
An engineer is free next week but funding starts the following month. Treating next week's assignment as secured because capacity exists is wrong. Hold the plan when the resource lead time, funding status or approval path is missing. Do not hire, book or commit funds.
