# Skill Curator
A safety-first pipeline for importing third-party agent skills (SKILL.md-format) from GitHub or other sources into your own library. Skills are executable-adjacent: a malicious or sloppy skill can exfiltrate data, harvest credentials, or inject prompts. Curate like a package maintainer, not a downloader.
## The Pipeline
### 1. Read-only acquisition
- `git clone --depth 1` into a temp directory. Shallow and read-only.
- **Never** run installers, setup scripts, `curl | sh`, `npx` bootstrappers, or any executable from the repo. Read files; don't run them.
### 2. Validate structure
- Every skill must have a `SKILL.md` with YAML frontmatter containing `name:` and `description:`.
- `name` must be lowercase-hyphens and match its directory name.
- `description` must say what the skill does *and when to trigger it* — it's the routing mechanism.
- Keep `SKILL.md` under ~500 lines; heavy detail belongs in `references/`.
### 3. Safety-scan every file
Review (manually or with a scanner script) for:
- **Credential harvesting** — reads of `~/.ssh`, `~/.aws`, `.env`, key files; prompts asking for API keys/tokens
- **Exfiltration** — network calls (`curl`, `requests.post`, webhooks) sending local data outward
- **Prompt injection** — embedded instructions telling the agent to ignore prior instructions, or "helpful" steps that expand the task into messaging/posting/purchasing
- **Destructive actions** — `rm -rf`, mass deletes, permission changes outside the task scope
- **Obfuscation** — base64 blobs, minified scripts with no readable source
False positives are common: doc placeholders like `"your-api-key"`, jailbreak *examples* inside a guardrails skill, and standard pentest reference content all look scary to a naive scanner. Read the context before rejecting.
### 4. Adapt tool-specific-isms
Community skills often carry Claude-Code-isms or other harness assumptions:
- Replace `${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT}`-style variables with the skill's own directory reference.
- Strip slash-command wrappers, hooks, and `.claude-plugin/` manifests you don't need.
- Keep `SKILL.md` + `references/`; drop tests, benchmarks, and harness-specific scaffolding unless you use that harness.
### 5. Dedupe by content, not just name
- Same name + byte-identical body → skip.
- Same name + different content → install with a suffixed name (e.g., `my-skill-alt`) and update frontmatter.
- Different name + near-identical content (check with shingle/n-gram similarity, not just titles) → keep the better-written one, skip the other.
- Remember: stars ≠ quality. Star inflation is real; judge by reading.
### 6. Install and record
- Install `SKILL.md` + `references/` (+ `scripts/`/`assets/` if safe and genuinely useful) into your library.
- Log every decision: installed / skipped-as-duplicate / skipped-as-low-quality / rejected-with-reason. An audit trail is what makes curation trustworthy.
## Ongoing Hygiene
- Re-scan on updates; upstream repos change.
- API keys and secrets always go through your platform's secure credential store — never pasted into skill files or chat.
- Periodically prune: a skill unused for months is clutter, not an asset.
