## Overview

NLP Cloud is a managed API platform for natural language processing, offering
endpoints across a wide range of tasks: text generation, classification,
summarization, translation, sentiment analysis, NER, question answering, and
more — powered by curated open models (and some proprietary options) behind a
unified API. The positioning is breadth of NLP tasks without infrastructure:
one API for the full classical-NLP-plus-LLM toolkit.

The distinctive value is task coverage: where LLM APIs give you one general
model, NLP Cloud gives you endpoints per task — often backed by specialized
models that are faster and cheaper than a generalist LLM for their job. For
applications needing many different NLP capabilities (a pipeline doing
classification, extraction, summarization, and translation), one integration
covers everything.

Use NLP Cloud when your product needs diverse NLP tasks and you'd rather call
task-specific endpoints than prompt-engineer a generalist for each one.

## When to use

- Products needing many NLP tasks: classify, extract, summarize, translate,
  analyze sentiment.
- Classical NLP pipelines (NER, sentiment, language detection) via API.
- Cost-efficient task execution — specialized models beat generalist LLMs on
  price for narrow tasks.
- Multilingual NLP across many languages.
- Prototyping NLP features without model infrastructure.
- Teams wanting one API for the whole NLP toolkit.

## Core concepts

- **Task-specific endpoints**: separate endpoints per NLP task, each backed by
appropriate models. Choose the endpoint matching your task — don't use
  generation for classification.
- **Model choice per endpoint**: many endpoints offer multiple underlying
models (often open models, various sizes). Benchmark the options on your
data — defaults aren't always optimal.
- **Specialized vs. generalist economics**: a small classifier via API is
dramatically cheaper than prompting a frontier LLM for the same label.
Route narrow tasks to narrow endpoints.
- **Multilingual coverage**: endpoints covering many languages. Verify your
specific languages — coverage claims need per-language validation.
- **Custom model training**: train custom models on your data for supported
tasks, deployed as private endpoints. For domain-specific classification and
  extraction, this often beats prompting.
- **Unified API**: one authentication, one interface pattern across tasks.
  Simplifies integration for multi-task products.
- **GPU acceleration options**: higher-performance tiers for latency-sensitive
or high-volume use. Match the tier to your SLOs.
- **Data privacy**: standard API data-handling considerations — review terms
for sensitive data; private deployments where needed.

## Practical workflow

1. **Map tasks to endpoints.** List every NLP task your product needs; map
each to the specific NLP Cloud endpoint. Avoid the "one LLM for everything"
   reflex.
2. **Benchmark per task.** For each task: your data, your labels, candidate
models on the endpoint. Task-specific evals — a model good at sentiment
may be bad at your NER.
3. **Compare against generalist LLMs.** For each task, compare the specialized
endpoint against prompting a generalist LLM on quality and cost. Specialists
usually win on cost; verify quality.
4. **Consider custom training.** For domain-specific tasks with labeled data:
train a custom model — often the quality winner for narrow domains.
5. **Design the pipeline.** Chain endpoints for multi-step NLP (detect
language → classify → extract → summarize). Handle per-step failures
   independently.
6. **Load-test at volume.** Confirm latency and rate limits per endpoint at
   your production concurrency.
7. **Monitor per task.** Quality metrics per endpoint — when a pipeline
   degrades, you need task-level attribution.

Checklist for NLP Cloud in production:
- Each task mapped to its endpoint and benchmarked on your data.
- Specialist-vs-generalist comparison done per task.
- Custom training evaluated where labeled data exists.
- Per-endpoint latency and rate limits confirmed.
- Task-level quality monitoring in place.

## Common pitfalls

- **Generalist reflex.** Prompting a big LLM for classification when a
specialized endpoint is 100× cheaper. Match the tool to the task.
- **Default model acceptance.** Using each endpoint's default model without
  benchmarking alternatives on your data.
- **Cross-task quality assumptions.** A provider good at sentiment isn't
automatically good at your NER. Evaluate per task.
- **No custom training consideration.** Sticking with off-the-shelf models for
domain-specific tasks where your labeled data could train something better.
- **Pipeline failure blindness.** Multi-endpoint pipelines without per-step
error handling and monitoring. One failing step shouldn't silently poison
  the rest.
- **Language coverage assumptions.** "Supports 200 languages" doesn't mean
your language works well. Test each one.
- **Ignoring latency tiers.** Default tiers for latency-sensitive paths.
  Match acceleration options to SLOs.
- **Cost aggregation blindness.** Many cheap endpoints sum to real money at
  volume. Track spend per task.
