## Overview

MPT (MosaicML Pretrained Transformer, now part of Databricks) is an open-model
family notable for long-context training (models trained on long sequences
from the start, not extended after the fact) and commercially-friendly
licensing. MPT-7B and MPT-30B were significant open releases demonstrating
that efficient architectures (ALiBi positional encoding, no length limits by
design) could deliver strong performance with practical deployment
characteristics.

For builders, MPT's historical significance is the long-context-by-design
approach and the commercial-use licensing at a time when that wasn't universal.
In current evaluations, MPT competes as a solid open option — include it in
benchmarks, particularly if long-context handling matters, but evaluate
against the current generation of open models.

The Databricks connection matters operationally: MPT models integrate with the
Databricks/MosaicML training and serving ecosystem for teams on that stack.

## When to use

- Open-model evaluations including long-context candidates.
- Databricks/MosaicML stack users wanting native model integration.
- Fine-tuning open models with commercial-friendly licensing.
- Self-hosting with efficient long-context architectures.
- Research on long-context training approaches.
- Commercial applications needing clear licensing.

## Core concepts

- **Long-context by design**: trained on long sequences with ALiBi positional
encoding — length extrapolation as an architectural property, not a
retrofit. Test long-context quality on your documents.
- **Commercial-friendly licensing**: released with commercial use permitted —
verify the specific license per release for your situation.
- **Efficient architecture**: design choices (ALiBi, optimized attention)
aimed at training and inference efficiency. Relevant for serving economics.
- **Model sizes**: 7B and 30B class releases. Benchmark against current
alternatives at these sizes — the field has moved.
- **Databricks integration**: training and serving within the Databricks
ecosystem. If you're on Databricks, the integration story is smooth.
- **Instruction-tuned variants**: chat-tuned versions for assistant use.
- **Fine-tuning foundation**: clean base models for custom training.
- **Current-generation comparison**: the open-model field advances fast;
MPT's position should be established by current benchmarks, not history.

## Practical workflow

1. **Benchmark against current alternatives.** MPT sizes vs. current Llama,
Qwen, Mistral at similar sizes — on your eval set. History doesn't win
   benchmarks.
2. **Test long-context specifically.** If long inputs matter: your documents,
questions requiring cross-document reasoning, "lost in the middle" probes.
3. **Verify licensing.** Confirm commercial terms for your specific release
   and use case.
4. **Evaluate Databricks integration.** If on Databricks: test the native
training/serving paths. If not: evaluate as a standalone open model.
5. **Consider fine-tuning.** MPT bases are fine-tuning candidates; compare
fine-tuned MPT against fine-tuned alternatives on your task.
6. **Model serving economics.** Self-hosted cost at your volume vs. API
   alternatives.
7. **Revisit periodically.** The family's position evolves; don't let a
   decision fossilize.

Checklist for MPT in production:
- Benchmarked against current-generation alternatives on your evals.
- Long-context quality tested on your real documents.
- License verified for commercial use.
- Databricks integration evaluated (if applicable).
- Serving economics modeled.

## Common pitfalls

- **Historical halo.** Choosing MPT on past reputation without current
benchmarks. The open field moves fast — measure now.
- **Long-context claims untested.** Assuming architectural long-context
means good long-document performance on your data. Test it.
- **License assumed.** "Commercial-friendly" still has specific terms. Read
  them.
- **Databricks assumption.** Assuming you need Databricks to use MPT (you
don't — they're standard open models) or ignoring the integration if you
  have Databricks.
- **Size-class mismatch.** Comparing 7B MPT against 70B alternatives instead
  of size-matched competitors.
- **No current-alternative comparison.** Evaluating MPT in isolation. The
decision is always relative — benchmark the field.
- **Static choice.** Deciding once and never revisiting as new generations
  ship.
- **Fine-tuning without comparison.** Training MPT without checking whether
fine-tuned alternatives do better on your task.
