## Overview
Lorem ipsum has its place — but real-feeling placeholder content catches layout problems that Latin
never will: long German words, CJK characters, right-to-left text, and realistic headline lengths.
This skill covers when to use lorem ipsum, better alternatives, generating realistic mock content,
and testing layouts against the content edge cases that break designs.
## When to use
- Generating placeholder text for mockups and prototypes
- Choosing between lorem ipsum and realistic copy
- Testing layouts with edge-case content (long words, other scripts)
- Creating mock data (names, emails, addresses) for demos
- Writing temporary copy that won't accidentally ship
## Core concepts
- - **Lorem ipsum's job.** It's a visual texture for judging typography and layout without the
distraction of readable content. For that narrow job — "does this type scale work?" — it's fine.
For everything else, it's a liability.
- - **Real copy beats fake copy.** Layouts designed around lorem ipsum break on real content:
headlines are shorter and punchier, paragraphs vary wildly, buttons say "Add to cart" not "Lorem."
Use realistic draft copy as early as possible.
- - **Edge-case content.** Test with: very long words (German compounds), very short labels, CJK
text (different line-breaking), Arabic/Hebrew (RTL), ALL CAPS, and empty states. Lorem ipsum tests
none of these.
- - **Obviously-fake markers.** Placeholder that might ship must scream "placeholder": `[HEADLINE
NEEDED]`, bright pink boxes, or `TK` markers. Lorem ipsum looks finished enough to slip into
production — that's its danger.
- - **Mock data realism.** Demo data should be plausible but clearly fake: use obviously fictional
names/companies, avoid real people's data, and never use production data in demos (privacy +
embarrassment).
- - **Generators and variants.** Classic lorem ipsum, themed variants (hipster, coffee, legal — fun
but unprofessional in client work), and structured generators for names/addresses/dates. Match the
generator to the context's seriousness.
## Practical workflow
1. 1. **Decide: fake texture or real draft?** Typography/layout exploration → lorem ipsum OK.
Anything resembling final design → realistic draft copy. Client presentations → always realistic.
2. 2. **Draft realistic copy.** Write the actual headlines (or close drafts), realistic button
labels, plausible paragraph lengths. Mark unfinished copy with `[TK: benefit headline]` —
visible, searchable, unshippable.
3. 3. **Generate structured mock data.** For lists, tables, dashboards: varied realistic entries
(different name lengths, statuses, dates, amounts). Include edge cases deliberately: the
40-character name, the empty state, the 10,000-row count.
4. 4. **Test the extremes.** Swap in: longest realistic content, shortest, other scripts, RTL, and
empty. Check truncation, wrapping, overflow, and alignment at each extreme. Fix the layout, not
just the content.
5. 5. **Keep placeholders findable.** Use a consistent marker (`TK`, `TODO-COPY`, lorem ipsum
itself) and grep before every handoff or release. A pre-release checklist item: "no placeholder
content."
6. 6. **Never ship it.** Final review pass specifically for placeholder text. Lorem ipsum in
production is the design equivalent of scaffolding left on a finished building.
**Quick generation (Python):**
```python
import random, textwrap
WORDS = ("lorem ipsum dolor sit amet consectetur adipiscing elit sed do eiusmod "
"tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua".split())
def para(n=50):
return " ".join(random.choice(WORDS) for _ in range(n)).capitalize() + "."
print("\n\n".join(para(random.randint(30, 70)) for _ in range(3)))
```
## Common pitfalls
- - **Lorem ipsum in client presentations.** Clients can't evaluate content they can't read — they
fixate on the Latin instead of the design. Always use realistic copy for reviews.
- - **Designing only for average content.** The layout that fits "John Smith" breaks on "Hubert
Blaine Wolfeschlegelsteinhausenbergerdorff." Test extremes early.
- - **Placeholder that ships.** No marker, no checklist, no grep — lorem ipsum goes live. It's
happened to major brands; process prevents it.
- - **Real user data in mockups.** Screenshots with actual customer names/emails in presentations or
portfolios. Anonymize always — it's a privacy breach and looks careless.
- - **Monolingual testing.** Designing for English only, then discovering German text overflows
buttons and Arabic flips the layout. Test multilingual early if the product will be.
- - **Forgetting empty states.** Every list, dashboard, and profile with zero content. "No data yet"
designed well is part of the product; lorem ipsum never covers it.
